Here is the scenario:
Headed to Palomar Mnt. having no problems what so ever. Get there and make it up with no problem what so ever. Get to the top loving how great she was handling. Park up at the top at the little store up there to get a water and have a break. Talk to a couple guys up there for awhile. Ended up riding back down with them. Two of them headed back to Miramar leaving us two more experienced riders to go back up for a second time.

Had a blast all the way up (he was on a '08 CBR1000R, and i was owning his asre the entire way up). Got to the top and parked it the bikes for a bit to exchange numbers so we can go on more rides later on.

Get ready to go, started up the bike and started off, and within 500 feet it started sputtering and died. She wouldn't start again.

I ended up coasting down most of the mountain. The whole way down i kept trying to start her and get her going. Finally at about 2,000ft or so i tried again and it started and held at idle. I let it idle for about 5 minutes without it dying and shifted into 2nd and it hasnt missed a beat since.

My question after all this is this. What caused it to act like it hated the world and didnt want to run? Could it just be the thinner air?

maybe the hard riding, and then quick stop got the motor too hot?

fuel pump got air-bound?

The fuel pump did sound like crap, like it was pumping air. Could it just be air in the pump that did it?

Check the fuel vent hose. It could have been vapor-lock, could be water in the fuel.

It doesnt do it anymore.....it must have worked itself out of it. But i did take the gas cap off and tried starting it a couple of times with no luck.

The main thing i want to get out of this thread is to make sure that no parts are going bad on my bike and dont have to worry about putting a ton of money in it to fix it.

if the fan ran after you stopped, i would not be concerned about the motor over-heating.

do you have the aestheticly matching right side scoop?
reportedly it doesn't draw air over the fuel rail like the stock one is designed to do. so even if the fan was running, the fuel(fuel/water mix) in it could bubble/vaporize and air-bind the pump in this expansion process durring your quick stop.

It's because DDFI 2 can't adjust for altitude unless you ride in the closed loop parameter in which it "learns" from O2 feedback and updates the AFV. Some genius thought there was no reason for a baro or MAP sensor. Note that the new system does have the necessary additional sensors to know if air density changes.

Buell won't disclose when it is in "learning" mode, but I can tell you that hauling ass up a mountain road at high rpm ain't learning mode.

It doesn't happen too often, but it's happened to my riding buddy to where his bike would barely run. Mine just seems to drop to about 40 horsepower until I get some sort of steady cruise in to get it to update, then it runs fine. Mine hasn't totally crapped out like yours and Ray's yet.

Long shot: how low was your fuel?

Took a long corner with a low tank this past summer and the fuel light came on. Back on the straight, the fuel lightl went off.

But your fuel light would have come on, hmmm.

Another simple possibility.

When was the last time you tightened your battery terminals?

The exact symptoms you mentioned I had happen to me, the battery terminals looked tight, but a 1/4 turn fixed it.

Between the hard riding, drastic temperature swings a little heat walk is bound to happen.
