One of my torx screws on the bottom belt guard is stripped. Its not rusted on or anything, just think the factory used a bit too much loctite. What is the best way to get this screw out? Just a simple bolt extractor bit? An ez out (this seems a bit over the top for this screw?)? I have never done this before, so instructions would be great. What size bolt extractor? Do I just simple drill the screw out? Ect...

Will any auto parts store have what I'll need? I know auto zone sells extractor bits only from what I can tell.

The ez out kit is a nice set to have around the house. I bought a set at Sears for less than $10. I have a bad habit of stripping bolts...

Try a Dremel with cut-off blade.
Needs clearance/access.
Cut a slot across head of fastener.
Size slot to fit wide straight screw-driver tip.
Turn it out.

If you're taking those torx bolts out with a screwdriver like tool, this will make your life easier in the future. : )

You can try the EZ-out, but be careful if you drill off center of the bolt, you'll mess your threads up. Maybe then the screwdriver deal that Atpbldr suggested.

If all else fails, I would dremel the head of the bolt completely off then pull my belt guard off out of the way. Then you can grab the remainder of the bolt that's sticking out with a pair of vise grips and screw it out.

Hmmm.. not so sure I'd dremel the head off at all... You actually want to keep as much of the head as possible. This is a very common mistake many people make. First try to ez out the screw. Drill in using an ez out that is smaller than the torx bit. If that fails you can dremel the screw flat on two ends and use a small cresent wrench to remove it/ and if your a good cutter make it just the right size for a box end wrench. This will work for sure. Just cut away a small amount at a time and work in for the best fit on a wrench. Don't cut too far in either, just enough to cut the screw and not what is under it. That sorta take practice, but works great for me. In fact it was the only way for me to remove my rear brake disc.

Correction...Ez out smaller than torx bit...Not smaller but drill a smaller hole than the torx bit to avoid the screw threads, then use approp. ez out size. Thats what I meant.

I used a torx bit socket and she stripped out. The bolt is on there pretty good.

Forgot to mention: If the bolt head is recessed so far you can't do any of the dremel tricks, we take a larger drill and drill ri}ght in the center of the torx (if it's a 1/4" bolt, use a 5/16" drill). Stop once the head starts turning, means it's cut comp. off. Then pull the guard off and grab the "stub", it'll probably turn out by hand since the head is gone and there's no pressure on the threads. (Been in Tool/Die 12 yrs., it's very easy and works great.)

I would get the guard off out of the way and do like i always do weld a square sided rod to it and crescent wrench it out. It takes me 5 minutes to get out stripped bolts.

The ez out you use..you will want to use the square tip one if you can. The twisted ez out does work, but creates pressure, the kind that will cause the remaining threads to push outward and cause unwanted resistance. I did this myself with the twisted and broke the twisted ez out off inside. If that happens you will NEVER get it out. You CAN NOT drill through ez outs.
Just an FYI...good luck with this one, I feel for you man since I did it myself just a few days back...I posted it "Kick the can" I think.

Just to clarify,in the PICTURE above there is a T-27 TEE-HANDLED TORX wrench and NOT a simple hex driver.Best of luck to the O.P. with the repair

Well I broke off the extractor bit in the bolt!! I had the vice grips attached, the vice grips started slipping, so when went to release the grips, the grips kicked back and snapped the bit. Im going to give the dealer a call and see if they can deal with it. I knew I'd brake off that bit....!!!

I dont have a torch. This is the bolt; Remove the lower belt guard, then behind the belt guard is an aluminum shield that is in between the swing arm and tire. Looking at this aluminum shield, its the bolt on the right side. It's a PITA to really get in there because the bolt sits in towards the tire and is in between the swing arm and belt. It's and T27 bolt.

This bolt is on there super tight. I've twisted 2 cheap T27's and 1 Craftsman. I don't know what to do with my limited resources...

The dremel method won't work, the bolt is just on there too tight... I'll have no torque.

get a sharp chisel and tap it with a hammer counter clockwise. it should work its way out. I have had the same problem on the HD twincam primary.

I'm not familiar with that bolt and it's location, but am a master of broken taps and easyouts.

The bullet shaped tungsten carbide dremel bit will eat through the easy out / tap. Get that out of the way. Then hopefully, you can just "drill slightly bigger" and get a heli coil in there, or just a new bolt behind it, maybe welded or epoxied just to keep it in place.

Thats what I do... I have a 23 year old KLR that breaks about every third bolt.
