Do I need a spring scale to tighten/adjust my steering head bearing on an XBS? I've only got an XBR service manual, and I've never heard of a spring scale (though I understand what it is) nor know where to get one quickly, nor think I'll have any use for one aside from this. Anyway, is it necessary?

I don't fish. Pops does, but I don't think he's got a spring scale. And doesn't the scale have to measure ft lbs, not lbs?

You do not need a scale to tighten the steering head bearing, you only need to torque all the bolts to the right spec.

The scale is used to check if the bearing is bad once the bolts are torqued correctly, I believe if its over 7lbs, then they are bad. You cannot adjust the bearing, it's either in spec or bad.

I use the fish scales. Picked it up at the local sporting goods/hardware store in the fishing section. Checked its accuracy by weighing a gallon of water at the grocery store.

Just tighten the thing to spec, or I am gonna go over to your house in snellville and pee on your lawn.

I don't think my tenants would like that :P

Thanks all, I'll just tighten it to spec.

I replaced the steering bearings a month ago. First check which type you have. Buell made a running production change between 05-06. You can see the bearing in the neck of the frame on a xbs.

Old style bearing = Black
New style bearing = Blue

Use the forward jacking point on the muffler to get the front wheel off the ground. Now turn the bars to the left and right. If your bearings failed, you will feel excessive resistance or grinding. There might even be a spot where the bars are difficult to turn through. (that means your bearings are garbage!) This is where you would use the spring scale and measure.

If they are ok, lower the bike, remove the 4 bolts for the bar clamp and re torque the steering head bolt.

Hope this helps!
