So I have a billet catch can from American Sportbike and love the look. I have however run into a small problem with it. At first I noticed that when I emptied it, it was full of junk (usual oil, fuel, condensation) which is making me happy. After some time I noticed that I didnt have quite as much, I figured the summer heat and engine heat had something to do with that. I checked the hoses and they are clear of debris. Anyhow, next I notice a few drops on my gear case and left foot a couple times. I noticed my breather filter was getting darker (an oil soaked red look). I checked the hoses again and they are fine. Now, it seems half the crap draining is now coming from and dripping from the breather filter. I dont drain as much from the catch can either. This (picture) is how its mounted... I thought about raising it somewhere, but where? Anyone else ever had this problem? All ideas are welcome..except the ones that include fire, bullets, or dynamite.

I have the Drummer Catch Can and once in a while I have to open it up and clean all the goop out.

Hmmm, yeah this is the same one, or just like it. I have never opened it up, but I've only run about 10 tanks through it.

Crack it open, sometimes they get plugged up with stuff too thick to drain out.

Like they said, open it up and give it a good cleaning. I didn't want to deal with finding a place to mount one of those breather filters, so I ran the return hose back up into the airbox. No signs of sludge in the airbox yet. Has worked flawless for the past 12k miles.

+2 on what the above posts state. Every other month I crack it open and spray it out with brake wash. The crap inside can get thick like creamy cake frosting and can clog the outlet drain. Takes less than 5 minutes and keeps the oil weep under control.

I have a little different approach, but it follows the same premise, instead of using a catch can per-say, I use a couple of pieces of hose, that "T" off a couple of times.

To start I took both the breather lines and reran them (put new hose in, and reversed the lengths) then "T'ed" them together and ran the third line down about 5" and "T'ed" it off again. All of this makes a straight path for fluid to run.
I Ran on line back up into the air box and put a breather filter on it so that the pressure from the cylinders has some where to breathe, and so that the oil wont go up.
Anywho... from the second "T" I ran the hose down, over top the cylinder, between the Header and the Frame, nothing is touching. I ran that line down to the oil cooler, and put a hose fitting in it so that I could cap it off. When it fills up I just uncap it, squeeze the hose, and run my fingers down the hose and its emptied.
I plugged the second hole in the bottom, where I took out the first breather hose.
Hopefully that all makes sense. Run one line all the way down and one back up and filter up top.

Well guys...I got home tonight and started on my bike right away. I removed the catch can and proceeded to remove the two allen head screws. Mind you these are 8-32 screws that are sealed in with some sort of silicon and TIGHT..TOO TIGHT. The first one comes out with the sort of effort that makes you cringe with anxiety. It comes out..okay..the next one..I begin to turn the allen key and its moving slowly. Then..SNAP!...the head comes right off. Now you could imaging whats going through my mind and coming out of my mouth.
I pause for a second and say "Thats gonna be expensive". I clean it up and begin to work on it. I drilled straight through the screw perfectly, so Im thinking "not so bad". Wrong, I pull out the screw extractor and put it in the hole..I begin to turn it and SNAP! Oh SH*T!! Now if any of you work with metal you will know just how hard these ez-outs are...there is no drilling those out.
Right away, I call my dad, a welder and fab. guy. What do I do? Dad says bring it here. He is even stumped, and now Im really bummed..150 down the drain. "Wait" dad says, I'll drill it out from the back. I figure if anyone can do this he can, and sure enough he did. Broken extractor is now out, but the rest of the screw will still not move. So needless to say the original 8-32 screw is now a 10-24. Bigger, stronger, and better than ever. I left the other the original size for now, but we plan the tap it out also.
Man!! what a job this turned out to be... so much for the 10 minutes job it was suppose to be, but in the end its all good. Good to have dad around!!

Nothing quite like life taking one problem and turning it into 2.....or more.
Sounds like you got it fixed. Was it full of primordial sludge?

Actually it was clear for the most part. Which made the whole process even more of a bummer. But on the catch can it has two hose fittings, one on top and one out the top/side for the breather hose. The breather hose fittings was angled down which allowed some of the "goop" to pass easily into the breather hose and to the filter. I turned the fitting 180 degrees facing upward so it should help..I hope. If the problem persists I think I'll just run the hose back to the air box. I de-slugged the breather filter and cleaned the breather hose out and will put it all together tonight hoping the filter is dried out now.
