For the last time, I will ask for your knowledge, advice and opinions on this topic. I've asked this question in the past but not directly. Then added I never really get a definitive answer.? I'm getting my self all worked up about this and need some help.

What's pushing the limits of the stock 08 ecm regarding to it compensating to mods (ie, running lean), specifically, a Standard Drummer, K&N, and an open airbox? Currently (3,000 miles) I've been running the Drummer with the K&N with no problems. Just to throw this in here, at my dealer one guy says I'm fine and another states I'll run lean, while past threads have had the same contradiction. I recently just purchased an open airbox and want to install it for spring, but now I'm having second thoughts, thinking that I should play it safe.? Does the 08's DFI have the ability over the previous systems to compensate better? So I guess it comes down to, should I put the open airbox on the shelf, install it as is, or install and get something like a Twin Tec with a dyno (I'm thinking this may be the only solution)? Will a Twin solve my issues? Is a Twin Tec one of the best options 08+ owners have at this time or will ever have? I don't know what you other 08 owners are doing for performance mods, if anything, I'm just that kind of person that can't stand STOCK. Someone stated that mods are like crack, I tend to agree.

What can I do/should I do to have a safe running bike, with the mods I want to do? I want to put this dilemma to bed. Any thoughts, advice, opinions would be greatly appreciated! I've been thinking about this for the past 6 hrs, along with having to write this all on my phone!

I thank you much,
Boney

Boney,
I have an 08 long, with full micron and K&N, and I just recently put on a CIA airbox cover(close to an open airbox, but not quite). I did notice a slight change in performance, but the motor is definetely short on fuel with this much air going thru it: you will feel it wanting to drink more, but the ecm just will not deliver. This means the 08 ecm does have it's limits.
I have ordered, but not yet fit, a twin tec unit, and i'm hoping this will fix what I am feeling from the bike. Xopti, on the buellitinboard, says that eventually the ecm will re correct any piggyback system we fit to the 08's, and that they are a waste of time. Perhaps he's right, but I am going to try anyways.
Just for your info, you'd probly be ok for a little while with the bike running lean, but lean ness will eventually cause premature engine failure, and besides, having run to optimum is much more fun : )

Why are you doing the mods? It's more a lifestyle question than a technical one.

You give no reason for making the changes. So, there's no problem you're attempting to resolve. There's no gain you're trying to make.

If there's no need and no gain, why stress yourself out? Save your money, treat the family, buy safer clothing.

If the Drummer guy says you're good, you're probably good. If your bike was chronically lean, you would know it by now because after about thirty minutes of riding you'd have a hole in your piston. So, the bike's probably good.

See your line about crack, quit cold turkey. Relax and ride.

There's no dilemma.

Stop feeding your paranoia.
