So I am leaning towards a new XB12scg, but after reading these forums I am getting concerned. Do these Buells run?! Seems everyone is saying they have all sorts of mechanical difficulties. I dont wanna dump 10 grand into something thats gonna backfire,die, sputter, etc. Not when my Ninja fires up and goes every time I want it to. Maybe theres just not enough good tales on here of the scg? Help! It kills my old man that I'm not on a Harley, but I think a Buell would sooth him over a bit! | ||

Don't know about the 08+ models but I can tell you is my 05 12Scg is still running beautifully. It spent a few days in the shop when I first got it due to a chaffed wire. At around 15K miles the fuel pump got a chaffed wire which I was able to fix myself. It took me about an hour from start to finish. Other than that I've had no other problems. The engine and tranny have been absolutely flawless. I have about 21K miles on her now and she's healthy and strong. | ||

Put it this way, I don't start a new thread stating how good my bike is running, thats just granted right. People come to these forums when problems occur for advice. It's an uneven scale to judge on. Buy the bike, you'll love it. | ||

Help! It kills my old man that I'm not on a Harley, but I think a Buell would sooth him over a bit! This leads me to believe that you are looking at a Buell for the wrong reason. They are absolutely brilliant bikes in their own right, but I would never buy one to appease someone else, and I wouldn't buy one solely because it was made in the US. I bought mine because it fits me. It fits me physically, emotionally, and mentally. I think it is a great bike and I think it is one of the leading edge bikes when it comes to design. Yes there are problems here and there, but there are way too many pluses about the bike not to be able to overlook the little niggling problems. If you are thinking about it, find one of the demo days, or a dealer that will do test rides, and ride it. You will either say, that's nice or when can I take delivery. They are bikes that speak to the soul, and there is nothing that speaks the same language as a Buell. If all you want is reliability, buy a Toyota (soul and spirit not required.)} | ||

I threw the old man part in as a joke. I don't buy a bike to appease anyone. Trust me, a Ninja was the last thing my dad would want me on, but he still loves to go riding with me. It's also not about buying a so called soul-less Toyota. I really like what I've seen of the scg, I just wanted to hear from owners about they're reliability. It doesnt matter how awesome something is if its in the shop more than on the road. Thats why I'm just looking for info on this bike so I can make a fully educated purchase when the time comes. | ||

Minipoppa, Just an FYI, an SCG, has the same motor as all of the other XB's, if it be a 9 or 12. I just got the feeling that you think the Scg is something all of it's own it the motor dept. | ||

My XT has been great for me, but the PO, did have it in the shop a few times. I picked it up in December, and have since put ~1600 salty miles on it since then. I test rode one, and from that moment forward, I had to have one. I still did my research, and there are just too many people out there with too few problems for me to walk away. | ||

i'm not sure who said it, but it's an apt analogy: "judging the reliability of a Buell by reading these forums is like sitting in the emergency room to gauge the health of your town" or something to that effect. my advice is this: GO RIDE ONE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. after several months of debate, and a handful of test rides on other bikes, all it took was one 15-minute ride. some stop-and go traffic, a few wheelies, a short stint (out in the boonies east of town) over the 110 mark, and a couple of stoppies in an empty parking lot...i was hooked. i was a little concerned with the limited steering lock, and the footpeg placement, but after two days and 350-some miles, i believe the slogan: "built from the rider down." i managed almost 7200 miles before the snow moved in for the winter, with no problems, and no regrets. i don't know if anyone else has had this occur, but all my H-D riding buddies, at one time or another, had to take a shot at me....i have yet to see any of their tail-lights. as far as i can tell, the eagle is screamin' in frustration, because it got beat!! | ||

Poppa, my 03 Bolt has been without a hitch, riding hard and long miles. Never a problem, not startup, not running, not ever. I feel ya on the thing with your pops, my dads told me a few times that if I bring home an import that I won't be parking in his driveway with it. Some people are loyal to American made stuff, and thank God the Buell is a good bike or I'd be sportbike-less. | ||

I'm a lifetime ricebike racer to the core. Street, racing, trackdays, drags, dirt, you name it. I've roadraced on bikes as small as 400cc broken 200mph on bigger ones. Buells are slow compared to Ninjas. Still reading? Buells have an undefinable, indescribable soul that I'm totally in love with. You simply must ride one. Someone suggested going to an Inside Pass event. That is great advice. Mechanically, they are just about as reliable as any Jap bike. | ||

K3, don't forget the grunt! I let a couple of my Gixer/CBR buddies ride my Bolt and they were impressed with the low, and scared to not lean forward. "Dude, If I lean back I'm afraid I'm gonna 12 O clock the bike!!" | ||

I have an '07 Scg with just over 16K miles and have had no problems at all. I've had it on the track, twisties, whatever and it runs like a champ. | ||

I have an 08, only problem I had was the exhaust valve actuator had to be replaced. And I'm not sure but I may have messed it up... | ||

Happy1 (a member here) just got his new '09 scg an hour ago and it runs great. Not only that but the bike is a thing of beauty! I love all the blacked out aluminum as well as the new front brake caliper, not to mention all the internal upgrades. And then there's that new bike smell.....ahhh. | ||

My 03 XB9S has ALWAYS put a huge smile on my face. It is a different beast....... But Buell is hands down a different company! I had a jap 600 before the Buell and I see no reason to go back! If you want to run 160 mph all the time, stick with jap. If you want a bike with soul and love to see how far you can hang your knee.... Get the Buell! It's pretty hard to put it into words. Some folks get it, but most just don't understand. And some never will! And those are the people you have to ignore when they start "trying" to crack jokes. Then you take them on a back road and after a short ride there jokes will fade!!! | ||

if I can give you a suggestion, I'd buy a pre '08 model, because many people had several different problems after that MY. I have an '07 and I must say I also had some problems loosing that engine up. I was about to return the bike, then they told me to try and drive the bike after the 1000 miles and see what happened. I changed pipe, filter and ECM, ran the bike after 1000 miles and magically (almost) all the problems disappeared! I found the perfection after I remapped the stock ECM with Direct Link, thanks to the map that Al at American Sport Bike gave me. buy that bike dude, and you'll be happy. it's not a 4 cylinder, 15.000 rpm bike, but a torquey fun machine... and a unique and timeless bike... hope you could buy one and fall in love as we all here did... good luck! |
