Well... this weekend saw the beginning of the resurrection of my XB1169 racebike.

Thought I'd put the diary on the XB section instead of the Racing section since most of the mods that I've done have left me with a bike that could be "streetable" if I were so inclined.

When I'm not in such a rush, I'll post more details.

I made a promise NOT TO hit the VISA to fund the rebuilding - that's why it's taken over a year to get ALL the stuff ready to march.

Started at my buddy Don Thutt's shop here in Lancaster, CA... my demolished racebike and the bike I bought from Vic Rosales with a lunched motor.

I'll do more of a narrative when there's time but for now, am uploading the pics.

Basically, we stripped down my wreckage and Vik's bike. Sent the good bottom end to Dark Horse crankworks so Dahmer and company could set up the 03 cases to receive the 08 flywheel set.

Next, they balanced and SERIOUSLY LIGHTENED the flywheels with the CP pistons and shipped the "new" bottom end back to me to begin the work.

I can't freaking believe how far out my stuff has spread (storage, Earl's garage, MY garage, Don's shop) in the year since I'd had the turn 8 get-off at Willow Springs.

BEFORE the last race (With Higbee's "borrowed" bodywork...)

AFTER... sorry about that, Shawn!

We just decided to not take ANY chances and are sending the jugs back to have them re-lined. I mean, the motor is apart, WHY NOT??? There's time between now and October's racing to get it done properly.

Apologies for the poor quality images. These were taken with my el-cheapo digital that I got at the company Christmas party. It WILL be replaced, it doesn't do any realy close-up at all (bummer but the progress couldn't wait for the photographer)

{NO - those pipes are NOT mine! They're for an XR750 dirt tracker that Don Thutt was setting up. The dude does AMAZING work on these air-cooled motors)

The demolished race motor awaits "Doctor Slaughter"

Note: torn isolator mounts, hole in rear case where the swingarm bashed out the hole you see:

The bike formerly owned by Vik Rosales awaits total disassembly:

Some in-process pics from this weekend - tearing down, re-installing the tranny, some flywheel comparisons.

It begins: (you can see tranny assembled on the transmission installation tool in the pic to the left of the parts wash bin)

Compare flywheels (note the LARGER crankpin on the 2008 on left) - lightened/balanced by Darkhorse Crankworks (thanks a GAZILLION John Dahmer and company!) - I gladly paid retail based on Dahmer/Darkhorse reputation, I don't owe Dahmer anything - he just does great work - no pimpin' here.

Earl Kellerman - more on him later - a WIZARD with ALL THINGS HD/BUELL! He's been working these motors since WWII - he raced Daytona back when it still ran on the SAND. Earl's son, Scott is GM of our local Antelope Valley HD/Buell - awesome family (but I digress)

Earl wrassling with the tranny. You really CANNOT do this without the tranny installation tool... maybe it's possible but havin "da famly" helping, we were able to borrow Antelope Valley's tranny tool (visible on right) to press the tranny together before closing the case halves.

Tranny coming together... cases/flywheels coming together:

The reason you're NOT going to see some in-process images is that ALL our hands are too busy for photo opportunities

Primary side.... notice anything missing?

The race motor can get some "free horsepower" by eliminating the rotor/stator and alternator. It can make for slightly quicker throttle response. Just means you have to have the battery on charge between races.

Good Luck with the rebuild.
Hope you get everything going in time for racing.

How much is it to do the bottom end?

That's all for now... when the jugs get back, I'll probably post up a few more things here... NEW forks/Traxxion AK20 cartrides, elimination of ALL key-functions (ignition and fuel cap)

Speaking of the Fuel Cap - Pete Alessio - Grandstand Designs - super cool guy, does GREAT work - I'll be putting the keyless cap on the bike... pics on the next go-around.

Right now the "new" chassis (from Vik's bike) is hanging, waiting for the motor to be installed... so I gotta get my butt to UPS. Hopefully Millenium isn't backlogged right now.

I'll have to get back to you on the costs for the bottom end. Seriously, I think Darkhorse Crank Works actually posts most of their costs. Obviously labor is a HUGE variable. For me, labor is free (with some favors owed to "the Family")

I'll go look at my receipts (won't have time for a few days) - but realize that I had to BUY that 2008 flywheel set NEW - and then have it lightened and balanced. You may or may not be able to get a "deal" on an 08 crank/flywheel.

I also had Dahmer do the large spigot bore since I'm running the short stroke/big-bore (XB9 at 3.125 stroke, punched out to 3.8125 = 1169cc) so I know about what I paid for all the work but if I had a streetbike, I'd probably not do the case boring and instead would do the "drop-in" 1050 kit.

Darkhorse retail price list is located at:

Darkhorse Price List

They are not such a large place that you can't just call them up directly or shoot an email.

Fixed the link... sorry about that. Too much cutting/pasting this morning.

Gotta run... late to work already but this is SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING - except I got bills to pay.

Steve,

I'm glad to see you getting your race bike back together and it was great meeting you at Road America. Looking forward to seeing dyno results for this set up.

Yeah... the dyno will be interesting. When I had it last run, it was putting out 97-ish but again, we were tuning just on the basis of the tailpipe sniffer. NOW I have ports welded in both pipes so I'll be able to legitimately tune the motor.

I have gone for throttle response and reliability. Kept compression at 10.5:1 Motor runs well on pump gas (Chevron 91 octane) - but because I don't run O2 sensor, will run on sweeeeet on leaded race gas. Gives me almost 2 more HP but I'm not fast enough to be able to use more peak HP - I need THROTTLE and U4 fuel is so freaking EXPENSIVE.

Maybe I'll post some dyno charts in a few weeks when I get the jugs back and can do the final assembly.

No - these are Millenium cylinders. They're going to have the Nicasil liners re-applied at Revolution.

Also still need to get a Penske shock. Jack Pfeiffer is bringing one out to Willow Springs this weekend for me to look at... if not, I'll probably end up getting a new one... OUCH!

the bikes looking good steve, hopefully you'll be back out there soon. it was great to meet you the other day, nice to talk to a fellow buell fan face to face. there are many out here and even fewer serious ones. maybe you'll bring the bike out here to a race? had my first race on the new motor a couple weeks back, i tried calling, i won supertwins and almost won thunderbike. started at the back of the grind and worked my way to the front and then proceded to crash on the last turn on the last lap passing for the win. my bad, i'll get him nextime.
let me know if you need anything.-andrew

Too bad you're not closer to me Slaughter. I would have cut your crank for free, and just had Hals re-balance it.

I'd have also cut your cases to accept a trap door.

Didn't the XBRR have trap door...

Is there another advantage to a trap door other than not having to split the cases..

who makes a door that fits a XB...

I've also "scuttle but" that baker never did a 6 speed because the XB lacked a trap door.

BTW slaughter props for the thread.. One of my favs in a very long time..

A trap door would need to be engineered. But I'm sure it wouldn't be THAT difficult.

Geez Steve... that trapdoor thing sounds worthy of consideration.

I may be putting a second (B) bike together if I end up running another race series. If not, I am going to turn it into an XB-Blast (the original plan instead of a B bike)

Going through pics now... prolly a few days before I get the writeups on just what has gone WRONG the past few months with my HURRYING to get it dialled in.

This is a very interesting thread and i can't wait to see the dyno results. I am curious to know just how the lightened crank effects the power band or torque spread. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Well... to continue the saga:

Back in September, we were HOPING to get the bike race-ready for October. It would be fun to take it to Inside Pass to do a couple final on-track engine runs and spend the day getting the new suspension dialled in.

Sounded like a good plan at the time!

I went to the local speed shop and had the EXCELLENT welder/fabricator weld in a bung in both pipes so for the FIRST TIME I'd be able to actually TUNE THE BIKE PROPERLY by reading air/fuel separately for both cylinders.

The sensors are removed and ports are plugged for racing.
