Just thinking out loud here...

Does anyone know if a stock 12 muffler (with interactive valve wired open) outflows a stock 9 muffler?

I have a 2006 XB9SX with an '07 inner airbox lid, air filter, and Race ECM. I did use all of this with a Drummer and absolutely loved the performance, however, I had to take the Drummer off because the volume was killing my ears, even with plugs and it made riding less than enjoyable and my head ring for hours after long rides. Because of this, I put my stock pipe back on and riding no longer hurts me between the ears (yay!). However, I kept the Race ECM on with the stock pipe to experiment a little. The combo works well 90% of the time. However, there are times at low RPM and partial throttle that it hesitates and falls on its face briefly. Especially if you slam the throttle shut and grab a fistful of throttle for wheelies, making wheelies unpredictable. I don't want to go back to the stock ECM because I dislike the surge and low RPM rideability, but the Race ECM isn't perfect either.

It looks like most aftermarket exhaust are going to be loud for me, so I was wondering if the 12 muffler flowed better than the 9, maybe I was worth sourcing one and seeing how it worked on a 9 with a Race ECM.

Thanks,

--Sean

Find/make something like this

Put it inside the exit of the Drummer.
Sound goes down, without loosing much of the power, and keep the nice torque curve.
That one is too big...

No. Because it's not a matter of flow, but of precisely timed pressure waves. A XB9 running a XB12 muffler and a correctly adjusted exhaust valve is reported to get a better driveability than the XB9 stock muffler. I haven't seen any dyno charts yet, so I still consider it as rumor.

Gunter

I have some baffles that fit Drummer mufflers. XB9 and XB12.

I have a Drummer with a baffle on my bike at the moment.

Hey Petebueller. Would like to hear more about that baffle. Like many others on this board I would love to have on of those "quiet Drummers" Kfab used to make but he is a victim of his own success and can't turn out the more labor intensive product. Like the looks of the Drummer and the reports of drivability at low RPMs. Hopefully gets rid of the "shelf" at 4.5-5K RPMs (XB12). If I could still have most of the benefits without the noise I think I would have a late addition to my Christmas list.

That is interesting Gunter, wish I could find more information on that one.

If I wasn't afraid of ruining my bike, I'd try to figure out a new program using ECMspy, but I don't have the experience to attempt something like that.

Hi Endoagain

The Drummer is tuned to get the performance. Adding backpressure to reduce the noise will impact the power.

I'll send a PM.

BTW, just to be clear, I am satisfied with the power of my bike, so I am not looking for big gains, just a way to have quiet performance and lose the low RPM surging.

Gunter - e-mail sent.

I'd try it. Always wanted to know what the results would be. Keep us posted eh?
