My 2005 cityx has been resetting my trips and clock here lately. Almost every time I hit the starter on the buell it will hesitate for about 1/2 second then the starter will turn over. But only after resetting my trip and clock as if the battery has been disconnected. I will come home connect the battery to my battery tender and it will go to maintain mode with in a minute telling me the battery is being charged and holding it. Have any of you guys experienced this and know what to look for?

Make sure your battery terminals are not loose.
Might want to clean them up & re-fasten.

+1 On what Midknyte said. I had the same problem and it was the battery terminals being loose

Going through the exact same thing right now. I've got everything nice and tight. I'm thinking I need a new battery even though it is on a tender. I still have the original battery on my '05.

Most likely your battery is failing. As batteries age they are able to hold a surface charge, but any deep amperage draw leaves them gasping.

This is why your battery maintainer is telling you the battery is charged.

If you get 4 years out of a motorcycle battery you must really be babying it.

This same thing was happening on my 03 XB9S....I thought I had a problem, changed the battery, everything went back to normal.

Same problem here. After fighting it for two months on a tender I replaced the battery and havent had a problem since.

Mine was a failing battery. I replaced it and everything worked fine.

I still have the stock battery out of my 04 Firebolt and it is still good.

Check the cables at the battery for tightness +1.

Check the length of the screws, sometimes the screws are a fuzz too long and wont seat right, a quick grind will fix that.

I didn't see where anyone mentioned it, but sometimes the terminal bolts feel tight, but still don't make good connection... there was an issue with the bolts being a bit too long and bottoming out before they were fully clamped down. Mine did that. Added a washer and all was well. But it's definitely a voltage thing... connection or battery.

Check the wiring harness bundle near the battery terminal as well. It should go under (and should probably be armored). If it goes over the terminal, it gets little micro nicks and the gremlins leak out. : )

I don't think I could be any harder on my 03, without just out and out wrecking the thing!
I had the same issues as the OP, and it turned out to be a bad stator.
That was back in late 03 I think, still have the battery I replaced the original with.
If you can check to make sure you're getting a good charge.
You're not using Mobil1 gear oil in the primary are you?

I bought my cityx about 6 months ago, used from the dealer. The dealer told me they needed to replace the battery when I bought it, so it should be a new battery. However looking back I had to wait about 2 hours for them to replace the battery. So I'm wondering if they really even did replace the battery or just charge it up. The terminals are tight and after that 1/2 second delay of pushing the starter button, it cranks strong.

Check electrical connections at starter, too. There are three:
1) Plug-on starter relay terminal;
2) Bolted battery cable (positive); and
3) Solenoid-starter metal cases are its ground (negative).

Had the same problem, checked the connections (all OK)
Replaced the 4 year old battery
All good now.

Thats called starter first peak,the initial draw on the battery kicks hell out of the battery all ya can really do is get a new battery or get one of those old school dist and dial back the timing a little till it starts
