I went to start my wifes 08' Scg and it wouldn't start! It had been about 2 weeks since it was last started and at that time, it had no issues. I put it on a charger because I killed the Battery trying to start it. It just cranks and won't catch. It only has about 600 miles on it, and yes, it has gas ; ) Any thoughts?

Load test your battery unless it's cranking strong.

Spark plugs are fouled from the last try. Probably just airing them will help.

Take the gas cap off and try it a with the cap off. Then put the cap back on and try it again. You may have vapor lock or a blocked fuel breather line. Its a long shot... but it does happen.

Sounds like classic fouled plugs. Same thing has happened to me. I have read that starting the bike and not riding it will cause the plugs to foul pretty easy. I dont know that as a fact, but many people have posted that on here.

Just my two cents...keep it on a charger. I had the same problem last winter and it appears that I will have the same problem again this winter. If I leave it off of a charger for more than 2-3 days, it will not start and was like that from day one. I think that they just don't like cold weather.

you can spray some startup-fluid in the air-box/filter or some carb cleaner from autozone. Something explosive besides gasoline

I've had some days where my dirt bike didnt want to start, I sprayed some of the starter fluid on the air filter and it started right up like a champion.... cant recall what the stuff was called/named, but it is purposifully made to start-up engines in these circumstances, that outtta do the trick

i used to work on small gas engines as a job, and have never been a believer of starting fluids. they can be harmful to the cylinder walls and i would highly recomend using SMALL amount of gas. and i mean small. keep hands and face away when starting because if it backfires it will result in the instant shave of all hair or even more serious 3rd degree burns and scaring. that said, there can be only two problems, fuel delivery or improper ignition. to check to see if it's got spark you can remove the spark plug from the motor leave it attached to the wire and ground the bottom prong on the outside of the motor. when you try to start the bike you should see the ark on the spark plug. make sure you are not touching the spark plug either or you'll be in for a shock. to check if it's fuel problem, give it a SMALL shot of gas from a spray bottle (i used to use an oldschool oil can that had the hand pump on it) down the throttle body and turn it over. if it runs and dies then you have your answer. if it's more complicated than this then it's probably best to bring it in. hope this helps good luck. oh and 1 other could be to check your oil level, they have a safety switch on that to i believe in case you're to low the bike will not run.

Would be very cautious about using any engine start product in your bike.

The O2 sensor may not like whatever product you put in there and poison it.

Overspray on the IAT sensor may not be a good thing either.

There must be a fundamental issue with your bike for it not to start - fuel/air/spark.

It would be better to sort out the issues rather than add new ones.

Everybody should memorize this line. I learned it as the Blessed Trinity: it's the principle behind all life on our planet.

Resolve each part one at a time.

Dont forget about compression.

You can have all the fuel air and spark in the world but without compression all you have is fire...

Compression more than likely does not apply in this case tho.

New12r, I agree with your thought; it's a '08 and if Buell assembled well, compression is last on the list.

It is basic, fuel/fire.

Htekwo, did you take the plug out and ground it??

If the plug fires and the color is correct then the next check is fueling.

If not; then plugs, coil, ground, voltage level, etc need to be examined.

Not really arguing, compression is necessary in an infernal combustion engine. However, I see it as a second stage, not primary. Usually, the bit about spark is "spark at the right time" so that means, in this case, on the compression stroke.

So, you're right, it's just that I would check that after the above three.

works for me air will usually make it run bad one way or the other but doesn't always play a part immedietly

Fuel/Fire; one can be "statically" eliminated in diagnosis by simply pulling the plug, ground it and check.

Make sure you use insulated pliers or any other insulated tool, because the next time you need to check the plug, etc, you will never forget the first time you didn't use the right tool for this job!

I don't! It was winter time in West Virginia, snowing, car not running, removed the coil wire with my bare hand and grounded it, POOOOW LMAO.

Did it once!!

Bright lights, big city...

I got lit up because I was the path of least resistance.

Leaning over the car, holding on to the fender for support, feet and body surrounded by moisture and I learned the hard way that the coil wire insulation was old and cracked!

Well, I solved the problem. I took it to the dealer ; ) When I get it back, I'll let you guys know what it was (that's if they actually fix it and knew what they were doing!)

Well, the dealer said it was a batch of bad gas. The drained the tank, put in new plugs and road it around, started and stopped it. I have never heard of bad gas preventing a motor from starting, but I guess. I would have thought that it would just run poorly, but I'm new to Buells. Does their solution sound plausible?

Not in the Buell, but I had it on one of my snowmobiles a couple years back. Pulled on that damn thing for about 2 hours, changed plugs, dumped gas down the plug holes, pulled a lot of hair out, then put some fresh gas in it and she fired right up!! Sounds reasonable to me.

It happens, rarer than what you hear.

I would suggest the new plugs did the trick.

If it doesn't happen again in the cold, they were right. If it happens again in the cold, it was a weak battery, weak spark and fouled plug, nothing to do with the gas.

All's well that ends well.

Well, all didn't end as well as I'd liked. The Dealer didn't offer the repairs under warranty, so they presented me with a $113 bill! I argued with them (respectfully) and all they did was give me BMCs customer service number. They didn't even call them on my behalf! I called them and they said they would investigate the matter. I kind of understand their perspective, but I wouldn't risk my Reputation over a $113! Can you imagine taking your Lexus to the dealer, telling them it wouldn't start and them presenting you with a Bill?!

Htekwo,

I intend no disrespect when I say this, but the shops in California charge a min. $80 an hour plus with a min. charge of an hour.

You now have a running bike with new plugs for an hour's worth of labor and some change.

Ride it and enjoy it!
