I've been looking for a Buell for a while and I found this on craigslist its a 2003 XB9S with 12k on it and the full race kit for $4k. Tell me what you think.

Looks great on paper...

There is a kit to upgrade the belt drive, I would calculate for this and offer him the difference.

How much is the kit? is it just the belt? or does it include a "newer" style pulley? Sorry for all the questions but I'm kinda new to Buells.

3-4 k is a pretty good price from reading it.
Of course, gotta check it out in person to know for sure.

Buy it, put some frame pucks on and ride it.
I did the same last fall and haven't regretted a thing

my humble opinion is that it is well worth 4k. if it starts, runs smoothly, shifts correctly, and doesn't make any funky noises, go for it. if he will come down any at all, it is all good. i wouldn't offer him 2500. that will probably just make him mad.

BUY IT!!!!

As long as you look at it in person and see nothing major wrong with it....BUY IT!

That is a very good price in my book.

My bike looked JUST like that one when I first bought her almost two years ago, I paid just under 5,500 for mine and felt I got a really good deal. And still do!

you can piece together the 04+ belt kit for cheap if you keep an open eye.
less then $300 if you are patient.

Buy it, get the frame pucks and axle sliders from day one then keep thinking of other cool stuff to do, because there is plenty :-)

I wouldnt trade my bike for any other bike, If you get it I hope you feel the same way!

I'm kidding about the 2500 offer. I will most likely offer him somethin in the 3 to 3500 range depending if it looks good in person and the weather is good enough to take it for a quick spin.....

its a decent bike i'd have to say!!! I think its worth all $4,000, but I would say $3.5-3.6k for starters and see how that goes. a absolute low ball of $3k would be an insult for the nice upgrades he has. But the mileage is a bit high for me to buy, but my 2005 has 15,000miles, so it has better mileage than mine

when i bought my bike the guy was trying to up the price by saying he put nice grips and a rear LED light 'upgrade', thats dude upgrades are worth to talk about, but when you see him dont let him drown you with em

There is a kit to upgrade the belt drive
Would the 9 have enough power to break the thinner belt???

Sounds good, but get it checked out.
It is worth the ~$65 to let em spend an hour looking it over.

Belt kit at American Sport Bike $481.00 plus tax and shipping.

I think $3500 is a great deal for both parties.

I just bought an 03 XB9S here in Phoenix back in September. It was factory stock with no race kit.
It had 8600 miles on it when I bought it. (It has almost 12,000 on it now ). The guy was asking 5K, I offered 4200 and we settled at 4600. I then had to put a front tire on and do a 10K service (with the help of Bartimus, an unbelievably kick ass nice guy I met here on the forums). Assuming the seller has done the 10K service and it doesn't need anything I think that is a fair asking price. I would offer $3200 and see where you end up. You are also getting the service manual which is a MUST have and your getting the race kit.

Even if he won't budge that sounds like good deal to me.

P.S.
Check for any weeping oil around and behind the rear cylinder base gasket. I'm dealing with that right now and it's gonna be at least $300 with the "buddy" price to fix. Also make sure the wheel bearings have the orange seals. There was a recall on those.

Good luck and I'm sure you will LOVE that bike. I do!!!

You don't have to do the belt upgrade. I'm at 12,000 miles on my '03 original belt and no issues (I even have 3 rock punctures through it!). I ride it hard every day, and no issues. My thought is that I (might) do the pulley and belt upgrade when this belt finally breaks, but certainly not until then- why would I fix something that's not broken?

My point- you don't need to plan to spend $500 and several hours work on that upgrade right away. HOWEVER, do be careful to never flex that belt in any form other than the standard bends- ie: sideways or too tight radius.

Obviously if you can get him lower go for it. It is probably worth the 4K. The race kit alone is worth some money now.

Since Buell no longer sells the race kit I remember seeing the exhaust alone going for insane amounts of money on ebay.

Looks exactly like my '03 before I wrecked it in '05 and decided to subsequently part it out. Kinda regret getting rid of it. I miss that bike.

I personally loved the way the bike revved and made power. The hole in the middle sucked but that is why a lot of guys sold the race can and threw a drummer on them.

So I e-mailed the seller, he is out of town till monday. He sent me a very detailed e-mail about the condition of the bike. He also sent me more pics of the bike. It looks real clean in the pics but it looks and sounds like it will need a new rear tire soon because its starting to flat-spot due to his highway commute to and from work last summer. Im gonna try and see if I can go see it on tuesday, then I'll make an offer based on what I see. Who knows I may have a "new" Buell soon..... Plus I'll have all winter to do some mods to it

Do keep in mind when he fires it up that the valvetrains on these things are noisy. Don't let a little clatter keep you from buying a SWEET machine.

+1 on taking it to a dealer to get it checked out.

Yeah I know about the valve noises... I've had a few Harley's from sporties to big twins. I have a ridged chopper with a 96" motor in it now, but my soon to be wife wont ride on it but she will ride on the Buell. I'm gonna try and keep the chopper but I may have to get rid of it due to lack of space in my garage.....

Concerning the belt; it seems the manufacture (Buell) upgraded.

Most Bueller's including myself start personalizing the ride sooner or later and it seems that the belt/pulley conversion for the 9 is one of the items that get’s done.

If the above statements are accurate, then go ahead and start your list of mods and set you budget.

This was the idea I was trying to convey in the previous post.

Just trying to offer a helpful suggestion.
