I have an 03 XB9S... and I run a GPS to see the twisties ahead. I now run off a cam corder battery in my tank bag. I WANT to tap 12 volts via a cigarette lighter socket from under the fly screen. I need to know if someone else has done this... no need to reinvent the wheel... and want to know the best place to tap the power (yes... I have a service manual).

1. My goal... a wire hot only when the key is on... not draw beyond some fuse rating when stealing power from something under there.

2. I need it to be through a cigarette lighter type socket... which I have a weatherproof marine socket already. This is a have to be!

3. I need it to be off when the key is off. (too stupid to remember to turn off the GPS)

4. I really DO NOT want to run wires from the main bundle under the seat. (I have a battery tender pigtail on the battery and used to leave it hanging out... until I discovered how hot and soft the plastic shielding over the wire became from the heat produced by the fan at the rear cylinder... or as I say... "Every XB comes with a free heated seat!";)

BECAUSE... heat issues... do not want to disassemble the bike to tap power (been there done that on my BMW)... and...concerned with rubbing through wire shielding and shorting out. (No desire to burn down my XB)

OK... save me Obi Wan!!

yeah I do this but I have a 9R. Best place to take your feed from is the back of the fuse box. Dunno where that is on the S but its up at the handlebars on the R. Alternatively take it directly from the IGN switch wires. Get some of the leeching type connectors that just 'snap' onto the wires and its a doddle. Just choose the right wires from the Manual.

One of the major diffs between the "R" and the "S" models is that on the "R" the "stuff" is in/under the fairing... almost nothing under the seat.

On the "S" the only things under the flyscreen is the ignition, turn signal connections, power to the headlight and the feed to the instruments. All of which has ZERO slack to manipulate or dig through!

ECM... fuses... etc... are under the seat... and there is hardly room for a Q-tip under the seat on an "S". I have a Gorilla alarm... and short of rolling over it with a steam roller... it won't even come close to fitting under the seat... and would be cramped under the flyscreen!!!

I like the layout of the electronics and such on the "R"... in the fairing... right where I need it... but when I test rode the Firebolt... I loved the bike with my all... except for my worn and damaged knees.

When I saw the Lightning... my thought was... PERFECT... a sport bike for an OLD FART like me!!!!! (I can count the days until my 50th birthday) SO I BOUGHT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!

now I am wrestling with powering things like a GPS and a radar detector... without resorting to duct tape! How do you think a second battery duct taped to the flyscreen would look? It couldn't be that bad ... could it... what if I paint it yellow to match the body work???

ok this may be a freaky idea BUT, how about taking a feed off the dip headlight?? Must be easy to get to and its wired to be on with IGN.

That was my primary thought... but my concern was... do I tap off the low beam... and lose power when I flip to high beam... or do I tap the high beam... and use the hi/lo beam switch for a power switch for the accessories???

Some one at Buell had this brilliant idea to have the low beam go off when the high beam is on... and I don't want to jumper the low beam to stay on when high beam is on or visa versa.

but... I am looking for some out side the box thinking... and if it weren't for the funky only one light on at a time head light system... that was a thought that would fix my need.

Unless I am missing something in my thought process and it matters not which way the hi/lo beam switch powers which light??? for what you are suggesting.

Is it that I can't see the forrest for all the frigging trees???

...at times I am not the sharpest crayon in the box!!!!

Also looking behind the flyscreen... if they needed a minimum of 4.5 inches of wire to fit the function... they used 4.512 inches of wire??? NO ONE can say that money is wasted in production because of using more wire than needed. When I tapped into the tail light system for my Hyperlite... I barely had enough wire to work with due to NO slack!

Hmm in the UK the dip stays on on full beam. Why not use the side/park light connector. Thats always on on IGN. You know the one that comes on when you turn on the IGN but have the run switch set to off? Im sure you guys have that although I think I read there may not be a bulb in it.

I think the lighting standards for the US and Euro Buells are different... sounds like you are describing something that is not obvious on my bike... I will have to take a look and see if there is something that is not used here... yet is the same part number on both models and just not used.

What about taking it from the gage pod?? That is only hot with IGN...

When you get it all figured out let me know what you did. What GPS are you using? Can you send a pic of where you mounted it?

das xb use the euro running light power lead. you will find plenty of slack in that wire. it is hot when key is in either run or park position. this will work just fine.

Noy sure how alike the XB an tuber ignition is. BUT.. On the tubers there are three wires one of them only have 12V commin thru when the key is on. If the XB has a simular set up, which I sure it is a litte, you can tap into the wire that is hot when the key is on. Just make sure you get a in line fuse.

I'd have to agree with Fullpower. Snatch the Euro running light feed. It's already fused, hot in Run, and apparently includes some slack. Now where are you planning on putting this power point connector?

The Euro running light feed sounds like the best bet.

I am running a Garmin Etrex Vista using a RAM mount system from GPSCITY.COM it is an Aluminum eTrex Zinc Coated U-Bolt Mount (RAM-B-149Z-GA5U) Clamped on the handle bars next to the front brake at the brake line out end of the unit. IT IS A TIGHT FIT!

Details... details... details... one disaster at a time... for inconvenience I was thinking behind the flyscreen as a last resort... the socket is pretty neat... with a spring loaded door over the socket that has a water resistant gasket. I want to find someplace easy to get to... but that does not look like duct tape engineering! I figured I would find good power first... then solve the difficult part. If I could not get power... I didn't have to solve the second problem!!! See... I was only having to deal with one problem... NOT two. Is my logic flawed??? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

I have a marine cigarette lighter type socket with a spring loaded door that covers the socket when not used. I finished this project today... and as much as I wanted to find a better place... I mounted it on the right (as one sits on the bike) turn signal stem.

The accessory socket had a bracket that had slots for four screws. If it were surface mounted on the flat dash of a boat... the socket would be parallel to the dash and not like on in a car.

So... on the XB it is mounted by automotive double sided tape and wire ties. As you look at the bike side view... it is on the top flat part of the signal stem... with the wires facing rear... and the socket facing forward. The spring loaded door has a heavy spring and a gasket to seal it pretty tight.
