Really does depend on the dyno. Some Dynos are happy & some arent. With the 9's they will range from 67-68hp...unhappy dyno, up to mid 70's. Thats totally stock.

The 12's are in the 88-94 hp range depending again on the dyno.

Oh yea I think it was Sportrider mag that has a real happy dyno & had stock 12 that wasnt even completely broken in putting down 99. But they are the only one I have seen even close to that figure.

I've seen one single dyno of an XB9 that was below 70 rwhp, and that was on a machine that had generated consistently low numbers and was suspected of being miscalibrated. Right Dave? :)

Most XB9's in stock form dyno between 73 and 78 rwhp. There will always be variations in one bike to the next, even if they are tested right off the line. Tolerances vary throughout the mechanical systems and even the electrical systems/settings have tolerances.

So to say "up to mid 70's" is not accurate. I've seen high 70's. It also depends on the standard of normalization used (SAE versus STD).

The peak rwhp also depends on which gear the run is used. Fifth gear will yield a couple more RWHP. If a heavy rider sits on the bike during the run it will hurt the HP; forcing the rear tire to continuously flex and conform to the curved surface of the drum can eat up a couple HP).

In my opinion peak rwhp for a Buell should be checked with minimal weight on the bike, just enough to maintain traction; the gear used should be specified.

Look at all the dyno charts posted in Keith's "From Cruiser to Sportbike: An XB9R Rider's Log" topic in the Tale Sections topic.

fifth gear is direct, no power through the countershaft, so should make less heat in the trans, and put a little more power to the wheel. is that the only reason for better numbers in top gear than 4th? or is there more to it?

That is the overwhelming factor involved. Their is also the issue of lower gears sacrificing more power to spinning up the engine/flywheel more quickly. That would only come into play on an inertial dyno, which is of course the most common dyno we see used to test motorcycles. Would be interesting if Aaron or Pammy would run the same bike through a brake dyno test to see what if any difference it would yield. The brake dyno testing holds speed constant for a split second thus eliminating inertial effects.

Japanese big four usually quote crankshaft HP. Recently though some have played the HP down in advertising. The Japanese have a habit of exaggerating HP too.

2003 XB9R Firebolt

Buell Pro-Series Race Kit
Best dyno result: 82.7HP and 67.8ft/lbs
Worst dyno result: 77.4HP and 59.5ft/lbs

Both of those were one the same dyno, but it had been 'tuned' in between those runs, and they were quite a while apart.

I'll rerun it late this summer after I get my Drummer and XB12 airbox. 15K miles currently.

Hey guys,
Dyno runs on my XB12R were run on the machine at Harley-Davidson / Buell Cycle Center in Waterloo, home of the infamous DaveS.
The guys that run this dyno are top notch and stand by the numbers this dyno produces to be dead on and I have no arguement with their skill and knowledge.

SAE corrected #'s
Stock w/535 miles 84.1 hp 73.5 torq
1340+ miles w/modifications
Race ECM, filter, Drummer 86.6 hp 71.3 torq

Note: more mileage on the bike may improve the #'s

Uncorrected #'s modified, 88 hp 72.6 torq, granted this is a slight difference but if you're really anal about the numbers then make sure you're comparing apples to apples and unless you're Nicky, Colin or one of their buddies most of us will never fully use even the stock #'s!! Leave your egos at the door...

Remember also that Ralphs numbers were made at Daves shop & for some reason all of their numbers are a bit lower than what others are seeing. Just might be a slightly unhappy dyno.

Actually you some of those numbers changed around. but close...

for some reason the run they did with the drummer they stopped it at 6.2k. so the hp number with the drummer is more like 90 or 91 compared to the 86hp stock.
plus the torque plus you got the torque numbers switched its 73 for drummer 71 for stock . like you said no biggie but you know me....

you know these conversations get everyone flabbergasted and thinking goofy things like there is something wrong with their bike....

different bikes different dynos different days different weather conditions...different a whole of things.

like I always say numbers don't really matter. its the way the power curve looks that matters.

so I say take all this with a grain of salt. if someones got better numbers than you it ain't no big thing.

I have seen numbers fluctuate as much as 4 hp on the same day same bike same dyno because of weather changes.

so
enjoy your bike

get on your badmotorscooter and ride

Now that I've got the race kit, 12 airbox and soon to have Drummer on my 9, I'd like to get it dyno'ed. How can I find out who has a dyno in Jersey and what should I expect to pay for the service?

Dynojet got a website?
They should list certified dealers in the area for you.
I haven't looked but it would be worth a try.

In NJ try Advanced Motor Sports (I think that's the name). The shop who builds the Kosko Buell racing machines. Talk to Richard. Expect to pay at least $50 for a thorough dyno testing.
