Hey all, I have a bone stock '04 12R that I would like to bring up to the spec of the newer bikes. I know they did something to the airbox, can I modify mine? I am going to do the pipe and ecm and air filter. Is there anything else I should do?

Easy changes with the airbox. If you look on the front of the outer cover, the one that says BUELL on it, there is a grey piece right by the gas cap. the 06+ XB models have a mesh vent there instead of the vent inside the left of the frame. You can remove that piece of plastic and leave it open, or transplant one from a 06+ cover, or get a whole new airbox in whatever color you want with it.

In order to actually gain anything, you will need to change your inner airbox. You will see its completely sealed off. In 06 they put some holes in the right side of the cover, and in 07 they moved the holes to the top and left sides. The best solution, is the one I did, and was went with the Open Airbox kit from American Sport Bike. This kit removes the entire inner airbox cover. It also looks great with the translucent plastics. : )

The 06 and later are making up for not having the ram air inlet through the frame, which the '04 and '05's have.

Go ride the '04 and enjoy it is all you need to do.

+1 Gowindward. I have a bone stock '04 12R. It runs great. I am not messing with it.

I don't get it. Why did they change the Ram Air snorkel?

To get just a wee bit more fuel capacity by capping off the ram air duct through the frame and using it for fuel.

Really, the things I have done to my '04 12R have been to make miner changes to the ergonmics for longer distance comfort. Things like the Buell custom seat, Heli Bars triple clamp, Buell traction grips, S model rider pegs, bar end mirrors, Zero Gravity Sport Touring wind screen...I had a race kit on it for about 6 months and took it off. I didn't care for the noise on longer trips and it didn't add that much to the power in the RPM ranges I ride in 80% of the time.

Cool, i had no idea my bike was different from the newer (up to '07 anyway) bikes. I get great mileage but could certainly use some more fuel. On the other hand I am always ready to get off after 100 miles or so. So there really is no benefit to changing the airbox? I have to replace my exhaust as it is so rusty (the bike came from Alaska).

The open airbox kit helps smooth out the bike at low speeds. Also when you do the open airbox you need to reroute the oil breathers, and that will stop your air filter from getting all gunked up.

Another upgrade was the Front Forks, 41MM to 43MM.
