So, if you seen my thread from a couple weeks ago then you heard that I have a leak from the rear rocker box gasket.

Well, I took the bike in today for the tech to check it out. I got a call 6 hrs later from the really sweet tech girl, she said that the tech replaced both upper and lower gaskets and replaced the engine temp sensor which is awesome that he checked it and fixed it, I didn't know there was a problem there.

I was totally amazed that it was fixed so fast, which was why I asked if the engine was rotated to replace the gaskets. The answer was no, there was enough clearance without rotating the engine.

How was this possible, has anybody ever heard of rear gaskets being replaced without rotating the engine on an XB? There's not even enough clearance for me to clean the rocker cover! Anyway, this makes me worry that the bolts may not have been torqued correctly, should I worry?

After being a dealer tech on the auto side, I can say there are many many shortcuts techs take to make repairs.
For the most part these shortcuts are safe, if they are not the car/bike will be back soon for the same repair again, except this time the tech will most likely be doing it for free. So most techs will pick and choose which shortcuts to actually take.

Plus i'm pretty sure someone who works on our bikes often could easily remove it with out rotating the engine completely, maybe just a tweak or two :-)

I bet you'll be just fine.

I am astonished that there is clearance to do it. Anyways, I left out how happy I am that it was a quick fix and not much down time.

It would take longer wrestling with the bolts on the rear cyl than it would take to rotate the engine.

Rotating the engine only takes 30 min MAX.

I could drop new rings, hone cyl, all new gaskets on both cylinders in less than 3 hours.

They probably just loosened the motor mounts without doing a full "rotation" procedure.

I can't see it being done without dropping the motor a little bit. There's not a lot of room under there. Even pulling the breather turrets is a little effort.

Ask to speak to the tech, and grill him. I'm betting he pulled the front mount, and dropped the y-frame, and dropped the motor an inch or two.

What does this rotating engine involve?

Thanks, Jon
