okay. i'm a bad parent. i bought my demo xb9s 7 weeks ago with 2200kms on the clock. it now has 4200 kms. tonight on the freeway, it started backfiring and running rough - the revs going from 5500 to 3000 in a split second, then back again. initially i thought dirty fuel, but after 2 secs it didn't clear so i pulled up in the emergency lane, at which point the engine died. work was about 5 kms away, so i decided to push it there for safekeeping overnight. at about the half way mark, i needed a breather, so i stopped. i turned on the ignition and got the flashing engine light. at this point it occurred to me i had never checked the oil level. yep - not a drop. it took nearly 750mL to get a reading again. it doesn't drop oil - so it must be burning. anyone think this is excessive? could there be something else wrong????

I would think low engine oil failures would be manifest as a really expensive sounding "whack whack whack" followed soon after by an even more expensive sounding dead silence.

Unless the ECM has some sort of overheat total system shutdown...

So the low oil needed addressed, but I think you may have some other problem. It sounds kinda like you are describing the same thing that people have updated the exhausts but not reset their TPS sensors describe. Not sure if the issue is related or not...

during extreme overheat conditions the ECM will go into a "skip spark" reduced power limping mode. too bad about the low oil level, thats real bad news...........dean

i installed the race kit exhaust and it ran ok but just didnt run any better.i think maybe the tps should be reset to get that outta the way first.mine ran like crap pluggin in the ecm and not resetting the tps.and i dont know if bein down 750 ml would cause you that much problems.look for a loose wire or the sidestand switch too.

Update
Ok - broke down again on the freeway. This time I got the bike tow truck to pick it up and take it to the HD dealer. they plugged it in and apparently there is a short somewhere - they think at the throttle but will know more tomorrow. the oil is a separate issue which will also need looking at. coincidentally, as my 9S was rolled into the workshop, another 9S pulled up with similar issues. Get this - both bikes are at 4200kms !!!!!! Freaky or what! Will update again once more info to hand.....

OK. They couldn't find a short anywhere. they checked all the items the computer told them too, and no joy. I got them to give the back its 4000km service seeing as it was there. It is running, but running rough. It feels like it is surging, esp noticeable about 5000rpm. I guess I have to wait and see. If it doesn't break down in the next couple of weeks, it'll be back at the workshop so they can assess the oil issue - I love her but this is causing me grief. Can't enjoy riding when every burble makes me worry... Maybe it will be a complete warranty right off and they'll give me an '04 9S instead. And monkeys might fly out of my butt.

did you give it a very thorough wire and connector wiggle test? maybe pull ALL the connectors apart, inspect closely, dry with compressed air, and employ a tiny dab of dielectric grease on each at assembly. dont forget the battery leads, clean inspect and tighten. do keep us posted. always nice to find out the result of an electrical gremlin hunt. good luck, dean
