Any one here purchased the break out box that is mentioned repeatedly in the manual for serious trouble shooting? Or is it cost prohibitive from H-D.

intrigued, is that the thing that tells you about the trouble codes?

im pretty sure a few folks on here have one for themselves, it shouldnt be hoarded or to be kept proprietary to the dealers

The break out box is nothing more that a place to safely test all the wires on the bike from the ecm. It will plug in between the ecm and harness.

No, I dont own one and prolly never will. I just tap into the wires with my special little test leads for my VM.

It's a damned expensive piece that prevents you from loosening up connectors by jamming meter leads in the connectors, and also allows you to check a circuit that's functioning, without breaking insulation on wires and creating problems down the road.

It plugs into the circuit, and completes the circuit, but you can still plug in. They're easy enough to make, but the HD/Buell has a plug-in port for every wire in the circuit, with numbers to make it idiot proof.

So, how expensive and can it be purchased by non-HD mechanics?

thanks

Again:

ANYONE can buy HD special tools. There is NO restriction on who buys what.

But you'd better break out your Gold card...I think the Breakout Box for ECM's was in $600 range, but I'm probably wrong on that. It is trick, though.

There are a few different ones, and different adapters, for them (I've made my own copies of some of the adapters). There's actually a suit-case sized box that holds all the Breakout boxes for Buell/HD. I'd love to get one.

thanks, I've spent that much for some tools but I'm not sure if I would go for this.

It's not usually a justifiable price unless you do harness/diagnosis work all day.
If I ever get back in the dealer network, I'll probably blow the coin on one.
