1. There are deer in Iowa?

2. If so, where would they hide?

3. If there are deer, and they don't have anywhere to hide, how come you didn't get one?

Tell us, Dave.... you put knobby tires on the XB9R, apply cammo, and ride it into the deer woods dontcha?

I'd tell you how many deer we counted on our place last week but it might make you

I leave 'em alone...but I'm hell on the armadillos and wild hogs.

1. over 1 million deer in Iowa
2. I hunt in the woods, where the deer hide.
3. It's harder than non hunters think. Plus I hunt with a bow, so they have to be within about 20-30 yards for me to make a clean, fast kill.

No knobbys on the XB, it's in the shop being Daveised even further

Go ahead and tell me, I won't cry.

I love to hunt wild hogs someday. I'd want to use my bow or muzzleloader.

I've already harvested 5 deer this season.

Ride to the edge!

Never associated Iowa with that large a deer population and didn't recall seeing that many trees in my travels through the state...I guess they seriously chow down on the corn though? Corn fed deer?

Hog hunting with a bow or muzzleloader....
Ride to the edge! No s**t!

Friend hammered a hog with a .50 cal muzzleloader from 50 yards...it dropped to its knees, got up, shook it off, and waddled away.

I shot one in the face that was charging me at 10 yards with 12 ga. 00 Buck. It got up and kept coming...buddy shot it with 7mm-08 Contender at 15 yards ...round bounced off shoulder. It kept coming. I shot again in face at almost point blank range and it dropped.

...somewhat of a rush

Come on down...we'll set you and your bow up as bait for that 500 pounder I missed ...thought the damn thing was a stray cow and hesitated.

Uh oh Sorry for the armed threadjack!

I'm going to cuddle with my stuffed Eeyore now

BTW...since I had the grips off anyway, I thought I would try the barsnake on the XB9SL. I'll post the results when I get it all put back together and try it. That was some serious adhesive the factory uses on the grip! Glad I didn't have to pay shop labor rate for taking that off.

How much is an out of state hog lic?

A well placed arrow will kill almost any animal.
I'd probably carry a back up sidearm, just in case!

If on private property with permission, no license required for hogs....even for Yankees! The Game and Fish Commission wants them dead... the hogs, not the Yankees. In the early 90's, some jerks imported a couple dozen black Russian boars for preserve hunting and let them go when they lost the lease. The biologist told me they estimated that the wild population went from zero to several hundred in 2-3 years of running loose. They were destroying pasture land, and taking food from the deer and wild turkeys...the hunting of which is BIG business here.

We've thinned them out pretty heavily the last few years. The adjacent property owners and I have been chasing them back and forth, gradually picking them off. I've killed a 20-30 over the last 5-6 years, but am not seeing much sign of them anymore.

Quite a skill...bow hunting. Guys around here think I'm nuts for chasing hogs through the briars with a pistol...it is a BIG pistol, though!

The whole Buell thing is becoming much clearer now

Used to be a restaurant in Mt Hamil, IA that featured a really great Chicken Fry. Their match books read:

It's been about 10 years since I did any bar hunting!

So Brad, are there any hogs left for me to come down and hunt or no?

Anyone want a belt swap kit?(back on topic)

Dave, a couple of years ago I could have almost guaranteed you a shot at one, but they have become more sparse recently. I'll go weeks without seeing any sign, then see some fresh sign for a couple of days...then nothing for weeks. You are ALWAYS welcome here, though! I'll show you where Paris Hilton sat.

We now return you to your regular programming...

03 XBs come with 72 tooth rear pulley and 30 tooth front pulley. The 04 conversion will have 65/27 pulleys. The relative ratio is about the same, but I'm wondering if going to the overall smaller tooth system will have any felt impact.

Also, anyone know if the front sprocket holding tool (Part No. B-45659) will still work with the smaller 27 tooth sprocket? Is there a way to remove/tighten the drive nut without this tool?

not to change the topic but.

is there a way that you find is easier to get the pulley off? when i took mine off i had to jimmy it back and forth and then had to use channel locks to get it off. it was said to me that they are generally drilled a bit offset so it makes it hard.

not that the channel locks did any damage other than putting a chew mark into the pulley, i just wanted to know what others do

Upgraded 03 XB drive system to 04. Thanks Dave. The hardest part was loosening the front pulley. Had my housemate sit on the bike and apply the rear brake as hard as he could while I tried loosening the pulley nut. I wish he weighed more than spindly 160lbs (lol - I'm a lot lighter). Took many tries because the rear brake wasn't strong enough to prevent the rear wheel from spinning. To pry loose, had to use a 3 ft pipe extension (about 3 1/2 ft leverage). Once the front pulley is loosened, everything's relatively simple. I was all ready to use heat gun to loosen things up, but wasn't needed. Heat gun would probably have helped. I noticed a bit of rust on the nut even though the bike is relative new (7 months old).

I installed Jim's Meganut instead of the OEM nut to lock the front pulley. Anti-seize instead of Lock-tite was used. This enables me to actually apply a greater torque than would be possible with the Lock-tite. Since the Meganut has integral locking flange (which is bolted to the front pulley using two bolts), there's no need to worry about the nut loosening. Am I wrong to use anti-seize instead of Lock-tite??? Any feed back from Meganut users?
