I just got done washing her about 45 minutes ago and wiped her down good so no water spots would show up. Then I went for a little ride to get the rest of the water off her.

Now for the bad part....

I turned the key on, and both needles do their full range of motion thing. Started her up and the tach kicks up to just over 1k. So far so good. I start moving and I look down and i notice that my Speedometer needle is sitting at 0, and I'm going probably 30 or so. Went a little farther and noticed that my tripometer is doing the same thing, sitting at 42.9 miles. I thought it was just a little bug thing, so i switched her off and back on. Once again BOTH needles move, and when i started it the tach kicked right up. But when i start moving, the speedometer just sits there. I rode about 15 miles and not 1/10 of it was put on my tripometer.

I'm not sure what went out, but it was all started after i gave her a nice bath. Any help on this would be great, guess i'll have to use my GPS for my speed and how far I've gone so i don't get stranded on an empty tank.

speed sensor. around 40 bucks and one alen screw to fix. simple and easy.

Faint hope clause going off the wash info: open up your sprocket cover, spray everything with WD40.

If you want to, open up the sensor connector and spray it directly.

First take a photo of how the wires are laid out. It's a challenge to get it back the way it was.

Probably won't do any good, but the sensor is about $80 so it's worth a shot.

Yes, it does a full sweep even though it's not working. The gauge is telling it would be working if it had any info to give you from that sensor.

thanks, i'll give that a try here in a bit. Hopefully just spraying it with WD40 will work, if not, i'll just grit down and guy buy a new one

I think you have to clean it and/or start looking for a new instrument panel soon?

i didnt have any WD40 around me so i just hosed it down really good with water. Still didnt work, but as soon as i got into her it started bouncing around. Then it looked like it was working fine until i stomped on the throttle, and the speedo would drop until i leveled out on the throttle. It did that for about 45 minutes until i got to I-5 and got to get some speed going. At about 100 the speedo went from about 10mph to 100mph and it's been working ever since without a problem. Still probably gonna buy a new sensor and replace to be on the safe side.

I would say leave it, just be careful not to spray any water into that area any more. Unless you want to waterproof it but that can get involved.

You might want to take the sensor out from the case, leave the wiring intact, and check the bottom of it. There might be some filings there that would interfere. Best to leave it until you have to change it unless you want the practice.

Pull the plugs behind the drive sprocket plastic cover and spray with WD-40.

This will provide a bit of waterproofing for the next time you wash it and when you next ride in the rain.
