My xb12s is currently running a solid state headlight modulator that during daylight hours will pulse the voltage to the high beam (when high beam is switched on)or simply light the low beam normally (when low beam is switched on).

I'd like to have the pulsed voltage go to both high and low beams so they are both modulating when I push the headlight switch to 'high'.

However, when I push the headlight switch to 'low', I'd like only the low beam to come on (so I don't blind someone with the high beam)

The headlight modulator is rated 130w, so I think it should be able to handle our two 55w bulbs off of the one 'high' wire.

I can't just jumper between the High & Low beams, because then the High beam would come on when you only want the Low on.

I don't want to use the European 'Parking bulb' hot lead to fulltime run the Low beam, because I want the Low to modulate with the High.

Can you use a diode? If so, do I risk problems on the Low beam leg by backfeeding the high beam voltage back to the S/S modulator? (The modulator does not output H beam and L beam voltages simultaneously)








or do I need to use a relay? (single pole double throw?)





If one of these designs would work, where would I find the diode/relay (radioshack?)

(I'm an old relay guy - remember the good old days when a computer program was machine punched out line by line on a punch card, then bundled with big rubber bands, and carried in 3' long cardboard trays to the computing center? And you got Laptops at the Cheetah III, not BestBuy!)

What does parking for high beams do?

Does it turn your highs into running lights? Then you set your switch to low. Flashing beams will shut off low (it's two different housings so you're not really able to flash high to high like other setups).

I'm asking, I don't really know.

I'm not sure I understood your question correctly, but I've edited the post to make it clearer (hopefully).

I might have used the wrong term for it, but the 'Parking bulb' is the tiny #194 bulb in between the high and low bulbs in the headlight unit. It's lead is hot whenever the ignition is on IIRC.

An easy mod for running both lights is to switch its hot lead with that of the low beam bulb, so that the low beam is always on and the high beam joins it when the bar switch is pushed to 'high'.

Please restate your goal with out any of your technical additions. We can help but your confusing the issue with your early attempts.

What are your goals with this mod?

it's not as pretty but i think this is what you are trying to accomplish this will give you a lowbeam that always flashes with bike on and will give you a high beam that flashes when it is turned on.

I thought you meant the European running light option in the sub harness.

There's a 4 wire connector from the harness to the headlight sub-harness. It's actually a 4 (from the harness) to 3 (sub harness). The fourth wire is always hot.

I was thinking that might give you some working options: set the low to always on and, using the switch, leave your high on.

Does that give you the combination you want?

Just had a look at their website. According to the FAQs it looks like you need their two bulb model. You also need to connect the Pass Flash needs to be connected directly to the modulator or disconnected.

I would use the relay set up you have a diagram drawn for Dogdaze.I used a similar set up on my old 62'nova and never had a problem with it just make shure you dont pull to much power through the stock lines so they dont fry otherwise install bigger wire.

Yes, first post was lacking in clarity and purpose - reedited (thanks 'Lost')

You're right Iamarc, I can't use the flash to pass switch. When the modulator sees high & low inputs from the flash to pass switch, it turns off the outputs (ie, gets dark real fast!).

I think their two bulb model would keep both bulbs on all time. (plus I already have the single bulb model)

'Fast', the modulator has heavy gauge home runs back to the battery as it's power source. The former 'hot' wires to the headlights are run to the modulator, but now only used as logic inputs.
