I"m fixin a small stash of tools etc to keep in my "trunk"... I was thinking of putting in a CO2 inflater... I normally use the 12G size(same size as in pellet guns) on my bicycles as they are cheap and easy to find. I know they make the 16G and 24G size that are the threaded type. Anybody have any experience using any of these??? I'm wondering how many of the 12G size it would take to fill one of the firebolts tires???
Thanks, Kevin

Kevin,
I have used the 12G size on my xb9s. I used 2 and it only brought it up to about 15 lbs or a little less. You would probably need about 4 to be safe getting very far. I think they are great though. I always have one for my Dirt Bike. I will probably start keeping them with my Buell now too. I have the little device that shoots CO2 and also has a hand pump so you can finish the job by hand if you need to. It is very small and light. I think it is called smart air or something like that. Most dirt bike shops have them. Hope that helps.

REI sells a hand pump, for bicycles. might take ten minutes, but you will never run out of CO2

Thanks Guys... I was trying to decide which size cartridge to use... And I didn't want to deflate the tire and fill it up just to find out... :) I think I'll just put in 4 or 5 of the 12G cartridges and go with that... Yea, I thought about using those small pumps but I"m guessing that after using one of those to fill up the size tires we have on our bikes you might not have much grip or strength left to ride with... :)
Thanks again, Kevin

I tried one a few years ago, and didnt have much luck, used 3-4 cylinders, not much air, maybe 20lbs. (maybe i had a cheapo pump) Better than nothing, however I have heard of people using a tool that screws in to the spargplug hole, that uses the cylinders to pump air in to the tire. Might be dangerous? Never seen it though. Only rumors.

There is an article in Motorcycle Consumer News Oct, 2002 I think, that describes how to take the guts out of a 12V air compressor you can buy from Home Depot to wind up with a tiny air pump. It has a quick release valve, a short hose, pumps to 43 psi and it takes up about the same room as 6 or so CO2 cartridges & the inflator control. I haven't gone this route but I'd like to try it.

I went over to the local bicycle shop sunday and found some 40G CO2 bottles. They were 3.99 a piece and they are the threaded type. They had some of the 24g threaded type cylinders but they were 7.50 a piece, although they were a bit smaller...
They did have a small pump that would fit in the 'trunk' of a FireBolt but I asked the guy at the front and he said it would pump up a tire but that it would take a few minutes... The pump was so small that it wouldn't have hardly any volume...
I put a couple of the 40g bottles in my 'trunk' and when I get a chance I'll get a couple of extras and see how many it takes to fill a tire...

Here's more on the MCN compressor article. It's a Campbell Hausfeld RP3000 12V Inflator sold by Home Depot for $19.95. It's a lunch box sized unit but the article explains how to take it apart, rewire the motor to a conventional 2 wire SAE connector, eliminate the air gauge and remove or modify the fan. They put the thing inside a 5.5" x 4" x 3" waterproof food storage container along with its 30" air line and a puncture repair kit but the motor/compressor is probably 4" x 3" x 1.25", small enough to wrap up in my tool kit.

Sounds like a nice project for a 4 day weekend.
