Well had a bad thing happen about 9 weeks ago and have a few questions.

The story.

Was hanging out in the garage with a buddy. Made the bad decision the not put a helment and gear on and took the bike for a spin around the block. It was no more than 2000'. When I came back around about to pull into my house a kid ran the stop sign in my yard and me off the road. I layed the bike down and hit a landscaping block with my head. I was in ICU for a couple of weeks and still pretty banged up and recoverying now. Kewl thing is I didnt break anything and my memory is coming back now.

This was life changing as I remember hanging out and then waking up in a hospital bed. I put everything and everyone at risk.

All I am saying is that please wear a helmet and gear. Even the smallest trips can end your life or screw things up forever and it happens so fast. I also am a very seasoned rider (motox, street etc.).

Now the question. The bike has very little damage. Abroke foot peg and need new grip and throttle tube. I can see where the paint is cracked at the weld on my handlebars so I am thinking that they are slightly bent.

I have looked through the posts about renthal or other motox bars and didnt find too much info. I would like to change my bars out to something maybe a little taller, wider etc. Just wonder what problems people have run into or what bars you are currently running?

any help would be great.

C.

I just put a set of Renthal aluminum bars on my Uly. No problems other than having to use 1" risers to get the bars up to original height and making a set of smaller diameter inserts for the hand guards. Also had to drill the small locating hole to orient the throttle assembly to the bars correctly.

Glad to hear you are on the road to recovery. You are absolutely right. Short trips count too.

A former employee, and friend of mine, at forty nine years of age did the same kind of incidental dismount from a four wheeler two years ago. He hit his head on a cement block and died in minutes. His helmet laid on the ground nearby as it was hanging on the bars while he was riding. He was just riding around his yard.

I changed my former City-X bars for a set from a local Yamahammer dealer. They were for a four wheeler. They were higher and swept back further. I needed a more upright position. Just about any 7/8" bars will work as long a the controls reach.

Glad to hear you're ok. As I tend to tell people who don't wear a helmet. It's hard to be cool when you're dead.

Etennuly,

Were the yamaha bars for a 4 wheeler? How much taller and swept back are they over stock?

Sorry to hear about your friend.

It has changed my life and the way that I look at things. I always knew that I would go down at some point just because of riding so much. Thing is that I thought I would be in control of the situation. Never dreamed it would be like it happened. I am very adimate about wearing gear and not just a helmet. I always wear boots, jacket, gloves, chest protector and helmet even on the hotest days but this time I was foolish and put myself in this situation only wearing shorts and a tshirt.

It almost cost me everything.

The bars were for an '05 Yamma four wheeler of some sort. They were 3" higher and 3" further back. I liked it much better. All of the stock stuff reached when I rerouted the wires and cables and such.

I have ridden without a helmet before in the same type of short trip. I just don't see how people ride all the time with no helmet. I can't see riding without a full face helmet myself. What do people do when a semi blows tons of dirt into their face? Bugs in their teeth?

I always wear jacket, gloves and full helmet. If I didn't wear the helmet for safety, I'd wear it for bugs! I wipe like 30 nasty bugs off my visor every day- they'd be on my forehead and in my hair if I wasn't wearing a helmet!

Glad you're ok, and able to tell your story.

Well I found a set of Pro-taper bars. Thanks for everyones help. These are a set of exact replacements for the factory bars(06 XB9SX)

The part number is 02-5258 from Cyle Gear

they are Tucker Rocky SE HBAR HON mini Jet black.

I say these are direct replacements. They are a hair straighter than factory and dont require and drilling of holes. They will also not fit the plugs for hangards because they are so thick.

anyway just FYI

The bars are alot thicker so the plugs dont fit for the handgaurds. The factory bars are thin walled and very silly.

I decided to grind the inside down until they fit because I prefer the hangard look. Only the very end like 1" of the bar fir the plugs.

Also want to say thanks to all the fellow Bad Webbers for all the support. I was a paramedic for 7 years and saw alot of crazy $hit. I never thought it would happen to me but it did. I realized nobody is invincable and it can happen at any time. I will have the scars on my face and leg to remind me everyday from this point on.

Thanks again

Chris

Very glad to hear you're getting well. I moved from Indiana (no helmet law) to Michigan where helmet use is enforced by law...as annoying as it is, the helmet saved my life. I was one who never wore the brain bucket unless I had to; I thank God every day I wore it this day.

bus

I ended up with a cracked helmet and a vanished superman-attitude. Wear your buckets!
By the way, I have Pro-Taper "Lowboys" on my xb12s. They fit great and are slightly more aggressive and slightly motox'ish but still comfortable once you get used to the new feel.

Wow... you really did get hit by a bus. It was "only" an SUV that took me out. Dr said if I wasn't wearing my track boots I wouldn't have a right foot now, and the Arai worked so well I never lost consciousness. Not even an inch of rash due to being properly covered head to toe- ATGATT is true wisdom. Unfortunately, human hitting metal at 35mph will result in something giving... in my case it was eight bones. Glad we're still here to share our experiences!
