http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZVyusWqNBQ I posted this earlier. Still not sure if it's a lifter. Thankfully it's not as loud anymore, but still noticeable at idle, when cold. I can barely hear it when warm and don't hear anything while moving except the nickels in a blender sound that is often quoted. I've been googling sticking lifter, lifter noise and adding ATF to the engine oil comes up quite often as a possible fix, but I wouldn't have a clue how much to add, because most of the info is on car engines. I'm using mobile 1 Vtwin along with a pure1 oil filter. I'm going to go ahead and change the oil, possibly to another brand. Anyone heard of adding gas to the engine oil to fix sticking lifters? |

I have heard of adding Deisel fuel to oil and letting it idle for a few minutes, then promptly draining and changing the oil and filter. I guess diesel fuel is a 'degreaser' of sorts. I prefer Sea Foam. It might be worth a try for ya! Drain a bit of the oil (half a qt. or less), then add sea foam to bring it back up to full, then ride for a little bit. I wouldn't do any high revving stuff, but put some miles on it (20-100) over a couple days, then do a complete oil and filter change. Could you explain this 'nickles in a blender' thing to me? Is it a normal sound on the XB? |

If you are going to do an engine flush, NON-synthetic transmission fluid works like a charm! take out about a quart or so and fill back with the trans fluid. let it sit and idle and warm up real good, twist the throttle a good bit and drain it. replace filter too. ( I would only free rev it with half trans half oil combo. trans fluid is pretty darn thin compared to the oil. so any real load can have a neg. impact. just let it warm up, do some free rev'ing but don't hold it to redline. just twist it to about 4K every 10 - 15 seconds for a couple minutes and be done with it.... DON'T ride it with the trans fluid and oil combo!) Mobil 1 is a very good oil! I suggest you keep it!!! But if its bad enough, it won't help you. the lifter might be collapsed.....where even cleaning it out a bit might not help it. good luck! -Robert (Message edited by rah7777777 on October 16, 2008) |

don't add unleaded gas to the oil. it'll dilute the oil and make it waaay to thin. i've done the ATF trick in my chevy cavalier. 12k mi later i had some low-end knock. coincidence? i'd try some oil additives, like, B-12 chemtool first. don't forget that you could always fix it the 'ol fashioned way and take it apart. might come out ahead in the long run |

the lifter may be collapsing more than sticking just change them both before you have cam problems its not that difficult |

Ive run straight trans fluid in a car before to get a lifter unstuck. It did work. I did not drive it though. I just let it sit and idle for an hour or so. My only concern would be if it would have an ill effect on the stator. |

Moose its not sticking its loosing pressure. If your gonna change your oil go back to standard oil 20/50. Lifter maybe going bad or just have debris in it. If its going bad the thicker oil should get the pressure back up again. IF this doesn't work than I suggest replacing your lifters. Don't do one do them all. |

+1 Wantxbr. DO NOT put any of the above in your motor. It is not just the lifter that will free up. The oil runs through the whole motor an so ALL of the motor will be subject to the different oil. Cheaper to pull out the offending items and have them tested and if need be replaced. The other option is try the above and risk a complete rebuild. Probably a good excuse for a 88 ci kit if you can afford it but if not then do not. |

Just run a high detergency oil for a while. Generally any diesel oil. Anything else and you are taking a risk. |

Talk about scary sounds, there's nothing more noisy than new lifters! When Uncle Charlie replaced his, he soaked them in oil for over 18 hours, and they still sounded louder than anything I've ever heard while they filled up with oil. |

It's almost winter.Up here in colder climates it's easy to tear it down and fix it. I suggest tear down and replace the lifters. TRouble is....when you get it down you'll want a whole bunch of performance bling. Easy job though...Gooooo 4 it!! |

Do you have to drop the motor to replace the lifters? I've never replaced any internal engine components, but lifters look pretty easy. I think I'll run a 20w50 dino oil and see if it sounds any different. It only does this first thing in the morning. I can let it sit for 5-10 hours and it doesn't make the tapping sound. The nickles in a blender sound is more like a sewing machine sound to me or a clicking sound like sticking a piece of plastic in the spokes of a bike tire while it's spinning. It doesn't always sound like that on mine, only at certain rpms, throttle positions and I can't hear it at all with ear plugs in. |

It only does this first thing in the morning. I had an 89 inch Sportster that did that.My X1 does it,but rarely. After reading the above quote(in red) i'd consider doing NOTHING |

is it still under warranty? Ha,ha, No. At least not that i'm aware of. It's a 05 with over 8k miles. Isn't the warranty only for 2 years? |

Warranty is 2 years from day of original purchase. There are a few 05s out there with some warranty left, my cousins 04 ran out 3 months ago. |

Pays to pre-fill/prime the lifters with an oil can(remember them?). Soaking can often not work because of air bubbles and the thickness of cold oil. |

Moosestang are you letting it sit and idle alot? Like when your tuning or messing with the bike? If so mine does it also, Just let it cool down for a half hour to an hour and it'll pump right back up again. |

I let it warm up for a few minutes while I get my stuff together. It doesn't do it when warm or at least not nearly as loud. I'll have to look into the warranty, can you check that online with the vin#? |

What revs do you have the idle set at? 1050 to 1100rpm is factory for mine. Read that the oil pressure drops below this revs. |

based on ths sound i hear, i would change the oil if it is due anways. use the correct weight. i've been chasing similar noise that i thought was lifters. inn fact i replaced all four lifters and i am ashamed to say, no change. these motors are a bit noisy. i;ve had the noise since about 28,000 miles. i have 42,000 on it now. i know it's not lifters. if it was something serious, it would have gotten worse. i bet if you take a long screw driver and put in to your ear and the oil pump, it would be the loudest and the same noise. don't worry, there is nothing wrong with the oil pump either. it just transmits the noise from the crank the best.lower rod bearings a roller design anf splash lube only. they are going to be a little noisy. just my 2........15 cents |

What revs do you have the idle set at? 1050 to 1100rpm is factory for mine. About 950-1000 when it's warm. It's about 850 cold, so I might try adjusting the idle. |
