Could someone tell me the part# of the airbox ( the black thing that goes over the air filter) on a XB12. And if I put one on my XB9, do I use the 12 or the 9 KB race filter> TIA Mike

Here is the part number the dealer used right off my invoice: P0215.1AA I believe, but I could be wrong, that the boxes and the filters are the same size.

And what does the 12 box do for a 9? Allow more airflow?

If you recall, there was an advantage to drilling multiple holes in the XB9 airbox. This created a lot of noise so someone tried a 12 airbox. The 12 airbox worked as well on the 9 as drilling holes (you don't need to drill holes) and it wasn't as loud.

From what I can tell, the box is a straight swap, but I think you will need the 12 filter.

Do you need the XB12 filter , if you are running the race kit.

I would like to do this on my XB9 instead of drilling the holes, but I have the race filter rather than the stock filter

Now let me get this straight, all you do is swap the 9 airbox for the 12's and it gives you 3-4 more hp and 4-6ft lbs of torque.

NOTHING else has to be done or adjusted?

Tangential conversation alert, watch out!

So, do the '04 XB9r/s' have the updated airbox, or are they still using the same one as the 03s?

yes its a simple switch out and yes it works. I've done it and Dynoed it.

no the 04 9's are still using the old box. Don't ask me why. Other than the bean counters said use up what we have.

The reason the 12 box works is because of the venturie in it.

so who wants one

Brian,

Please pardon my ignorance. Three questions: 1) is the airbox just the top portion that holds the airfilter or both the top and bottom (the black piece that is bolted to the frame) portions, 2) XB12 & XB9 use different air filters, 3) do you need to reset the TPS when swapping? Thanks.

Regardless, I want one. Are you working on Sat?

Would this work? Take the box out completely and fabricate a pexiglass cover that keeps crud from getting in the throttle body. Wouldn't that give better or same results?

DC
just the top portion, the xb's use the exact same filter, no the tps does not need to be reset.

buellicious
no it won't you no longer have a pressurized box. You need the plenum area for it to work. More than likely you'd lose alot down low. I think some have tried it and I think the results weren't all that favorable.

the venturi works it has for years. Thats the difference between the 2 box tops mainly.

I saw the first posting that Bubba did and so bought a plastic funnel from a hardware shop, then cut it down to fit inside the airbox directly above the bellmouth.I stuck it in with silicon and then trimmed the 'funnel' back until I got the best seat of the pants results. I reckon that the standard single throttle-body is too big for the bottom-end and so what happens is that by reducing the space that the engine 'sees' fools it into thinking that it has a smaller 'carb'than it actually has. A few years ago I read about how a big 'roll' on the outside of a ram-pipe helped flow, since airflow into a 'carb' doesn't just come from the centre of the ram-stack, but also 'round the corner' from the back. This would be especially true in an airbox where the ram-pipe protruded in a good way, such as on the XB.Alternatively it could simply help flow by speeding up the air on the 'outside' of the corner by reducing the turbulence induced by the 'dead-spot directly above the stack. Of course you would need a flow bench and some smoke to know what really happens. All I know is that I got a definite improvement which was made even better by fiddling with the power-Commander.
I don't suppose that the flat-spot in the roof of the airbox is part of the 'flat-spot' designed-in to beat the noise tests?
