I lost the thread I started about this same thing.

Basically the question came down to... can you swap the rider and passenger pegs back and forth on an XB-S?

I have a 2005 XB12Scg and the pegs will interchange I think but they are NOT the same. They do not match correctly in positions on mine. One of my fronts broke off in a fall and I had to order new ones.

I believe Boliver is right. They may be able to be interchanged but they are not the same. The fronts have a spring setup to where when pushed up they snap back. The passenger pegs are not like this. The passenger's have a ball and groove style. I believe there is a set in the classified being sold by Vjones...

They are not. The ride pegs are spring loaded while the passenger pegs will fold back.

I would not recommend interchanging them. It could be dangerous if your rider peg accidently folded back on you while riding.

They are very different. You could interchange them if you want to have the passenger pegs always be sprung down like the rider pegs are, and have the rider pegs be sprung up like the passenger pegs are. That sounds dangerous and dumb to me tho...

I actually took a set of new 1" drop rider pegs out of the package at my dealer the other day- then I removed the passenger peg from a new XB12S and studied the crap out of them both to see if there was a way to swap the hardware and make the 1" drop rider pegs stay in the up position and use them as rider peg. The conclusion I came to was "no".

Oh, and props to St Paul Harley for letting me disassemble a brand new bike on the showroom floor! I do love that place...

I'll take all your words for it that the pegs are different... but keep in mind, the spring of the driver peg is a separate part all together. In many bikes (like all the tubers) the pegs are the same, you just install the spring in the drivers and no spring in the passenger, so pegs are completely interchangable.

In theory yes...try it and see. Worse that happens is it doesn't work.

The pegs have a different construction- like I said, I looked at them side-by-side to try to make it work. Granted, my motivation was to install a set of 1" drop pegs on for the passenger- sounds like you want to put passenger pegs up front? I did not have that mindset as I was studying them. I am confident that you could not install the rider pegs for the passenger and have them click into the up position. I suppose you may be able to do the reverse and have the spring hold them down- or worst case I guess just let gravity hold them down.

Actually I'd like to put the drop pegs on the passenger as well. But since the passenger pegs look like R pegs, I would've wanted to keep them for track days as well. (so kinda like completely flip flop them.)

When I get my passenger pegs in the mail later this week I'll just compare the two.

Cool. I pull mine off quick tonight and show a couple of pics- it's very difficult to describe my thoughts with words and no pics!

Sorry for not posting last night as promised- my night got busy! Here are the 2 issues I see:

In order for the pegs to stay up like the rears, they need a place for the spring and ball to insert, like the hole in the rear pegs, the fronts do not have this hole, and do not even have material in the center to be drilled out:

Issue #2: in order for the front pegs to be sprung down such as the stockers do, they need to have a spring in the center of the peg. The rears are solid in the middle, therefore no room for the spring:

Clearly I have now spent way too much time on this! So...I am off to re-assemble my bike. I snapped a few other shots, so let me know if you want others posted for your viewing pleasure- I may even bless you with some more of my awesome paint writing skills! ; )

Holy cow! I appriciate all your help!

Here's why I was arguing...

I thought (incorrectly) that the spring and ball were mounted in the peg bracket and pushed into a hole in the peg. As it turns out, the spring and ball are in the peg itself, and push into a hole in the bracket.

Bummer!

And thanks again!

Haha no prob. I was actually going to say thanks for asking because I've really wanted to analyze it for a while now and try to find a way to make those 1" drop pegs work in the passenger position. I spent a long time staring at the dumb things today, scratching my head and coming up with nothing! Oh well, at least now I can stop thinking about it! : )

Thought...

Fill in the 'not solid' part of the driver pegs with JB weld, let them harden and cure for awhile. Then drill a hole into the newly solid peg, and add the spring and ball.

It works in theory!

Or just simply add one a couple of those wavy washers on top and below the peg in the bracket to snug down the peg and add constant tension, and don't use the spring and ball at all.

That's how many other bikes lock rear pegs.

I think that there is a lot of lateral force on the opening that the spring goes into- I wouldn't trust that to JB Weld. Perhaps a good welder could come up with a solution if we want to use 1" drop pegs in the rear.

Your second idea sounds about right tho. My Yamaha was like that. I'm too much of a geek about keeping my mods stock looking tho! It's just a mental trip up that if I do it, I want to do it like the factory would....dumb, I know... That doesn't mean it's a bad idea or wouldn't work tho!

Mine fit in there pretty tight the way it was- prob wouldn't tank much to make 'em snug enough to hold them selves up.

I've been contemplating this mod too...1" lower for passenger and looking at the pics I think it could be done. If you added JB Weld inside the web to give the spring a place to live, the aluminum body you need to drill though would give enough support to keep the ball from suffering any lateral stress (cause really it's just being pressed inward a fraction of an inch when the peg is folded). The trick would be to create a new plate that the ball pops back out into to lock. Could probably use the stock plate as a template and would need to move the 2 smaller holes inward towards the central pivot hole. I'm gonna try it and will report back with some pics, just need a set of spare fronts pegs to start with.

Deffinately try it and let us know!

The trick would be to create a new plate that the ball pops back out into to lock

If you drill the spring/ball hole in the exact same location in relationship to the main pivot shaft as the OEM passenger pegs, then you would not need to make a new plate, the OEM plate would work exactly like with OEM pegs.

Looking at the pics, I don't think the hole can be drilled in "exactly" the same location. It might need to be moved in towards the pivot a few thousandths to clear that web area, but maybe not. Bidding on a set of pegs now...

Update...easy solution, mount SS or Long passenger pegs set-up. Drops pegs approx. 2" but also moves them back slightly.
