I just picked up a can of Sea Foam for the sole purpose to be used as a fuel stabilizer. I bought the Sea Foam over the Stabil simply because the Sea Foam seems to be of a better quality (I want the best). I know Sea Foam has other purposes other than stabilizing fuel... After doing a search on this topic, Stabil is the most common product used for stabilizing fuel. So my question is, anybody use Sea Foam as a stabilizer, and or should I just use some Stabil since the only purpose of the product is to stabilize fuel?

i have used seafoam in an old honda cb350, to try and clean up the fuel system, and it worked fine. but the stabil is amazing stuff. i do landscaping, so i usually winterize a lot of small engines (mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, generators), both 2 stroke and 4 stroke. i use stabil in everything, and everything starts up in the spring immediately. no new plugs, no draining gas, no smoke, and no drama. it flat works! i don't winterize my motorcycles, as i can usually ride at least every 10-12 days throughout the winter here, but i woudn't hesitate to use it in them if i needed to. good luck!

I use Sea Foam every year to winterize. Great stuff. The bike fires right up in the spring.

Sea Foam is a great de-carbonizer, says that it can be used as a stabilizer, but I don't think it works as well as Stabil.

I winterize two boats, a 35hp and a 225hp every year and two snomobiles, a 340 and a 1000 every winter for spring, I noticed that fuel treated with SeaFoam begins to break down the longer it sits. I've never ever had that issue with Stabil. I just didn't see the longevity with it.

If you're going to store your bike longer than 4-5 months, I'd go Stabil. 3 months? I think you're ok with SeaFoam.

I drain the gas in my mower, snowblower, weed trimmer and run the carbs dry. I've had more problems with Stabil then good. My bike and my sled I fill to the max and thats that. No problems.

What is this winterize stuff i am hearing? I vagely remember this word when i lived in michigan... but never hear it in SoCal. OOH wait you mean that you actually have to put your bike up for a few months? Hell no what a shame. I guess ill have to ride that much more now to make up for all those that can not during these next few months.

I'm ok parking the bike for a few months. I spend those months snowmobiling and snoboarding. Season changes FTW : )

Oh, and the only things I really do for winterization are:
1) Stabil in the tank- then run the bike a bit to be sure that the Stabil-ed fuel is in all the lines and such. Top off tank.
2) Put battery tender on the battery
3) Throw my stands on it to prevent flat spots on the tires.
4) Throw a sheet over it to keep the dust off : )

My only comment about stabil is, make sure you buy fresh stabil. I only use a small amount of the stuff. Once made the mistake of putting some in a bike for the Winter layoff, and I think the stabil I had was really old. Thankfully, it was a dirtbike and easy to drain the gas in the Spring and start over with fresh. Bike ran fine when I stored it. The old stabil was the only reason I could come up with, as far as why it ran like crap in the Spring. Ran great after I got fresh gas in it.

Everyone I know with an older carb'd bike (including me) swears by SeaFoam. The stuff cleans the mung out of your fuel system, stabilizes fuel for storage, dissolves oil residue in your crankcase, and puts hair on your chest.

One note of caution: if you use it in higher-than-recommended concentrations (which is sometimes the lazy mechanic's last resort when trying to avoid a carb tear-down, make sure you fire up the bike in a WELL VENTILATED AREA. Do it once and you'll understand why.

This is probably nothing you need concern yourself with, though, if you're looking to use it strictly as a fuel stabilizer. I encourage you to run your bike for a few minutes with a couple ounces added to the oil immediately before draining it--if your rings are worn you'll be shocked by the foul goo that the SeaFoam flushes out. The stuff is fantastic.

Edgy,

what does adding to the oil before changing do?

I've unscrewed the plugs on the old Mercury outboard and poured a little into the cylinders - from the smoke pouring out upon starting, you'd think I was burning old tires!

I think sea foam is some bad as sh t I use it in my 4 wheeler it is also good to clean water out of the carb when you go a little too deep. but it does drop the octane levels. that tank of gas runs like crap.

+1 on the Stabil. Make sure that no matter what you use the gas tank is full when you park the bike for the winter to help prevent condensation from forming in the tank.

Personally, I've always wondered what Sea-Foam does to oxygen sensors. I use Sta-bil, myself.

Sea Foam is huge in the Audi world. Since there's some questions as to how to use sea-foam, and what it does, I'll post a link to the main How-To thread. This doesn't have anything to do with using it as a fuel stabilizer, but I think it's still aplicable to this thread.

It works great! I do the whole three part process on my car every spring.
