'06 XB9SX

22K and the belt shredded on me tonight while coming out of a soft curve and shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

I don't do any hard driving and have a total commute of about 90 miles daily.

It didn't snap. It completely shredded.

Is this normal for that type of mileage and non-agressive driving?

There is no 'normal' for belts. They can last over a hundred thousand miles for some people, and they can catch a rock and snap in the first mile for others.

Most of us fall ANYWHERE in between.

Just toss another belt on there and be on your way.

Yep, what he said!

If you had chain drive you would be on your second one anyways.

After riding a couple of new chain drive bikes, I've come to appreciate the smoothness of a belt drive.

I have a chain conversion right now. I'll probably end up going back to belt by the end of this year. While doing some winter mods. 09 belt.. muhahahahaha.....

Belt is one of the reasons I bought this bike. If I have to replace it every 22k, then that's fine by me. I hate the chain noise.

How long will a chain last and how much do they cost (especially if you replace the sprockets)?

I keep a spare belt in the tank bag for long rides. I have never needed it but now that I said that ..... I know I will need one at the most in opportune time!

My Triumph has 20,000 miles on the original chain and is just now starting to show signs of stretching. About $160 for a quality chain and both sprockets, should I deem it necessary to replace the sprockets also.

Two friends with Honyamazucki 600s went to bike week this year, CA to FL and back. Before leaving, both bought new chains, one bought a new rear sprocket (way more than listed above). They ended up finding they had to oil the chains every gas stop, one still had to replace a chain and the sprocket he didn't change, and both needed new chains when they got back. Their story made me glad I have a belt. Zero maintenance on the belt in 25K miles so far.

Sounds like they didn't know how to buy parts or how to maintain their bikes.

Never had an issue with my chain bikes (pretty sure if they were THAT bad then they wouldn't all be chain driven anyway...). Don't get me wrong, I love the tensioned belt drive too, I just don't think that chains are the evil that they are sometimes portrayed as.

Before putting your new belt on check your wheel and idler pulley bearings. May or may not be bad but since your there better safe than sorry.

with a properly maintained new roller chain you can get 50k-100k out of them. Old chains used to chew up sprockets and go out every season. I don't find it to be the case anymore.
I wish I still had an old owners manual around. I believe my KLR only had "inspect" never a mandatory replace.

I've never had a chain break. but i've been told they always jam the wheel. I like the idea of breaking a belt and having it sling out the back instead of stopping me.

As for the guys that had to oil chains at every stop etc.. wow..
I can't imagine the terrain.. rolling in the surf? I've never replaced a sprocket and i'm workin on probably 3-400k under my belt on a bike. I do like to change bikes frequently.. but i've bought some old junkers.

I hope there wasn't some sort of implication that a honda or yamaha was a lesser reliable, harder to maintain bike.
