What kinda of gains can be expected from a port job on a xb9 motor that is stock except for race kit and open air box? Is it worth it to go for a stage 2 on a stock motor? And would this be the best way to get better performance as well as maintain the best reliability of the motor?

Don't know what your budget is.

The "bolt-on" 1050 kit gets you more cubes more cubes gets you more HP without hitting reliability.

The stage 2 mods by themselves - stock cams, etc - might get you 5-ish HP (guessing) PM me... I gotta git to work but I've got some links to some dyno work around somewhere.

If you're just looking for a bit more "poop" I'd be willing to bet on more cubes instead of more valves for reliability.

Thanks Slaughter, are the 1050 "bolt on" true bolt on kits? Also I would guess that it would produce more heat as well?

The 1050 kits ARE true "bolt-ons."

Cylinders and pistons, gaskets. Iron lined cylinders and pistons or ceramic lined with forged pistons. Prices seem to run from $800+ for the iron lined and pistons and I think about $1500+ for the ceramic lined cylinders with the lighter forged pistons.

You don't need any case boring as you would for the 1169cc kit (3 13/16 bore)

I don't know how the stock oxygen sensor would work with the bigger displacement. From what I know, you shouldn't have to mess with anything, just install the pistons, cyliners, re-install the heads - break-in the new top end and you'd be good to go.

Fread Finnerty did the 1050 kit on the San Diego shop racebike and they didn't have to do ANYTHING with the tuning. The oxy sensor made the adjustments and Fread never had any complaints about throttle response.

Couldn't you just get the XB12 connecting rods, reuse the XB9 piston, and have super high compression 1203?

Ever HEar of anyone throwing the 88 kit in an xb 12 bored out to 1450 cc`s and Not having any tuning issues like you said for the xb9 out to a 1050.But then again I guess we are talking about alot more cubes here...
Maybe the 1250 kit or so wd. be ok...
Since thats not far from the stock 1203..But hardly worth the bother I wd. think...

Froggy, If you put the XB12 rods in you will end up with less compression - they are shorter.

P.S. - Different rods will not change the displacement - You would need the 12 crank and rods to up the displacement. If you kept the 9 pistons with the 12 crank the compression would be ultra high.

My "Gut" tells me that going from 1203 to 1450 might start causing problems with the fuel injection trying to "keep up." If the O2 sensor "sees" a lean condition, it can only go so far in adjusting.

My problem is that my experience stops at 1200cc because the racing classes usually limit displacement to 1200 - and the 1203 of the XB12 is an exception. All racing organizations can forgive those "extra" 3cc.

That is where something like ECMSpy would work to get more fuel for the big motor you're talking about - at 88 cubic inches, you're going to be pumping another 20% air/fuel and I'm not certain that the ECM can force that much change. Again, that's just my "gut"

Alessio in Italy did the mods to his motor and also had a problem with fuel delivery. You might look at some of what he had posted.

Fortunately or unfortunately depending how you look at it, the XB engines are fairly well tuned from the factory. That is why you do not get large HP and TQ increases for the usual engine mods like cams, porting exhaust etc. The factory did there homework to get a descent amount of reliable HP and TQ out of what they were working with. I am not saying it can't be done, you can get more power, it just matters how big your wallet is. As others have said, the best bang for the buck is cubic inches.

YEah thanks Slaughter.... YEah I bet there wd. be MAny MAny sales IF someone could come up with the fuel/Timing tables for the 1450 kits...
Yeah I had followed Alessio`s posts before isnn`t that something as big as the Buells are not many if any have got the 1450 kits to be Street rideable and of course to be somewhat dependable...

YEs Cubic Inches is a big bang for the buck...So Is stroking it...but ya know what happeneds there mean piston speed goes way up...HAve a 104 5 inch stroke Big Twin lots of Torque etc etc but will not hold up being a 5 inch stroke...

All one has to do is maybe use that ecmspy but lots of time and when ya don`t know all that Mumble jumbo its hard...
