I just got my first XB12scg about a month ago. Its an 05 with race ECM, jardine pipe and stock filter.

Anyhow, Ive noticed a couple of times after the bike is really warm and I get up to 4,000 rpms that it will detonate. I always back off. This is with speedway 92 octane I think.

Would ECM spy be a good tool to remedy this or should I try something more simple first? Bike has 4500 miles on it and runs great otherwise.

use ecmspy and tune the bike. the area that you have spark knock (tps vs rpm) is likely too lean. either richen it up or decrease the timing. i had the same problem with my stock ecm on an xb9r with a k &n filter with a drummer. one tuning session and the spark knock was gone

Set the static timing first. It's easy, though you need a couple of "Harley Davidson" rivets if you want to keep it stock. I replaced my rivets with screws, but they rusted, so you could do the same but I would recommend stainless.

You will also want a couple of jack stands, and a chunk of rebar. I didn't even bother to pull the plugs, which makes it a little harder to wrestle with, but it's doable even by yourself.

No other special tools, you can hear the fuel pump cycle when the sensor "triggers".

Increase octane, pull timing, add fuel, colder plugs. All those will help eliminate detonation.

Hmmm..... yeah, I'd try buying my Premium from somewhere other than a no-brand station before I went to all that other trouble. There's a reason Speedway sells it cheaper.

Huh, that's what I thought my rear stand was for.

As far as fuel goes- it all comes from the same refineries. In some markets, BP/Amoco is the exception, and in most markets, Holiday is the exception- don't put their Blue Planet crap in your bike.

A little research will let you know where your fuel at your favorite station is coming from. Kind of extreme I realize, but I find it worth knowing that I have quality fuel in my vehicles. Also it's good to know which ones are literally selling the same fuel as BP for sometimes $.15/gallon less (for premium).

Same refinery's yes. But different Blends (Additives are added when put in the tanker for delivery.)

I was having the same problems with my cage, its been lightly modified. I ended up adding 4% fuel at WOT, and then was able to advance timing by 2 degrees in the upper RPM range, no pinging and quite a bit better power and throttle response.

That is the key. Some additive packages work better in some applications than others do. Finding the one that your bike likes can make a difference.

Most franchise stations additives are good. The ones you may need to be leary of are small stations that don't pump alot of gas. Meaning just not busy.

In terms of fuels, they don't all come from the same final refineries. While the base stock is the same, some companies like Chevron actually have their own transportation lines and hence have greater control...

But, back to the issue at hand.
Two very easy and cheap checks -- you may actually have a pre-ignition problem, not detonation. You "typically" have enough turbulence, and hence flame travel, and enough ignition timing at mid-rpm where detonation doesn't take place for a factory engine. Run a step or two colder plugs or at least check their condition. And definitely check your ignition timing -- the ECM is relying on it being set properly so you need to confirm this as well.

Chevron actually have their own transportation lines and hence have greater control...


Not in my neck of the woods. Trucked by various different companies. If your Chevron you'll get their blend. If your Mobil you get that blend. If your BP you get that blend. But can get delivered by same contracted trucking company.

So how can we tell if it is a pre-ignition problem or detonation? I have been struggling with this problem since day one on my '07 Uly. Plugs look good, timing is dead on, still happens. I tried retarding the timing which helps, but it still happens. Even now when the temps are in the 60s.

I have been reading alot about how EcmSpy can help, but I wouldn't know where to begin with tuning.

Its ok Tocramed. Consider this an ecm spy/tuning discussion.

One other thing I'll say about how my bike runs: Its not entirely as smooth as Iam wondering if it should be. After its warmed up running around 35 mph it feels ever so slightly rough almost like a car with an intake leak. I thought maybe it was just the nature of the motor but I dont remember my S1 being that way.

It does idle and start good and the roughness at cruising speed seems almost insignificant.
