Have I mentioned lately how much I love the search function?

It looks like lots of topics on this forum, but really it's the same questions being asked over and over and over....

Nah, he has only 158 posts, and I doubt he memorizes thread numbers to pull up pages like this faster : )

I e-mailed Woodcraft about their XB GP shift rod because I was confused about the correct length for my application. Here is my question and Woodcraft's response:

The GP shifter uses the top hole with the arm rotated about 180
degrees. The standard shift uses the lower holes, and hence the
shorter rod.

Thanks,

Eric Wood
President
Woodcraft Technologies, Inc

I am still confused. Every photo I've seen, and BadWeB members have posted that when moving to GP shift in the upper hole the adjustment rod has to be shorter. From what I read their GP rod is longer than their stock replacement one! I guess I'll order the rod and send it back if it's wrong. Am I not being clear enough in asking my question, or just too stupid to understand the answer? Any help here?

Eric Wood doesn't know what he's talking about.

Maybe email him the picture, and ask how the upper hole would need a longer rod?

hey andy thanks for the link... you may be at risk of surfing the web too much and staring at badweb too much.... get a life.

Just trying to help...thought you'd have a better chance of reading the responses to the already asked question than you would of having everyone post their same reply again.

And thanks Frank, you're right :-p I did not memorize the thread number! Just clicked search, typed "GP shifter", hit enter, and voila!

I do stare at BadWeb too much tho...I sit at a computer all day, so it's my relief from work!}

I included two photos in the e-mail I sent to Mr. Wood, one showing the stock "lower hole" set-up with the stock rod, and another showing an "upper hole" set-up with an very obviously shorter rod. Between my explanation and reference photos I thought the answer would be straightforward... I was wrong.

Then XL1200r is correct. That guy is clueless.

true that....I know, brett you rock...

Im plannin' to hit you up for the big stuff when I split the cases to fix third gear!!!

I did switch it to the GP style the past few days, just to check engagement with third and maybe it's actually a bit better. I dont like the geometry in the stock pivot bolt position and i switched it back.

Order the Buell GP Shift - Replacement Shaft. That's the correct one.

On Woodcraft cite, the "shorter" shaft is for using their shifter on the lower hole, with the arm (part that clamps to the main shaft) positioned for normal shifting (180 degrees) opposite from GP shifting position. The shaft lengths are not comparing two GP positions, one lower and one higher, but between regular and GP positions.

The GP adjustment rod is longer than the normal adjustment rod for THEIR SHIFTER. So Mr. Wood is technically correct. The GP adjustment rod, however, is shorter than the STOCK adjustment rod.

You know, I thought that might be the case- that's why I specifically pointed out that I would be using my stock parts, and all I needed was their adjustment rod. So, their "long" GP shift rod is actually shorter than my stock one. Clear as mud. I will be ordering the GP shift rod.

My brain hurts... update to follow.

Just use your stock goodies and flip the short arm on the tranny shaft. Works pretty fine.

Woodcraft is going to have to charge an arm and a leg for just packing/shipping a $10 link.

You can also get the shift adjustment rod from H&D suppliers. The threading is standard, one standard and one lefty threading. If you are using the stock shifter, mount the shifter to the upper hole, flip the arm 180 degrees and position the shifter roughly to the position you like, and measure the distance, of course accounting for the length of the threaded rod heads.

I've seen them in a catalog (can't recall where) for about $7.
