Ok, first. FULL disclosure.

I wired up an accessory plug behind the fly screen that hasn't seemed to effect ANYTHING for over a year now.

This morning while attempting to commute I noticed the motor was cutting out. It had a been awhile since I'd ridden the XB so I thought I needed to blow some stuff out.

I noticed during one of the motor dropouts that the gauges were zeroing out and my light went out (reflection in tailgate in front of me told me that) SO, it was randomly going dark on me.

Got turned around and got home.

Tried to restart.

First couple tries. Nuthin. Then, the gauges spun up and I hit the starter. One chug, that was it. Nuthin.

Had to come to work so I haven't had a chance to get after it at all.

Any precedents up there anybody's heard of. As I said. My accessory plug has worked fine for over a year but, I haven't had a chance to look around in there.

Probably little to do with your accessory plug. Worse, sounds like worn insulator somewhere on your wiring. Now find it.

There will soon be more experienced Ss owners (right bike?) who will tell you the more common wear areas.

I think your accessory plug has nothing to do with it. I'll let the experienced owners diagnose your problem, but it's probably the battery, voltage regulator.

You could have a wire shorting to ground somewhere, better check that accessory plug.

WORN?! WTF?

It's barely got over 10k and has seen rain once!

WOw. I'll look around.

Yes, by all means CHIME IN KIDS! I'm all ears.

My bike did that when the battery had an internal short.

Same thing with the regulator/rectifier died. Like everyone else, I don't think your accessory plug had anything to do with it. These damned bikes have the most fragile regulator/rectifiers on the planet. I sure hope they upgraded that part when they came out with their police model...

Battery is new. How do I test the voltage regulator? I'll also check to "grounding' issue.

Take your battery terminal bolts out, wire brush all of the contact points. Charge the battery put it back together and try it again. If still bad look for broken ground wires(behind headlights), worn through wire insulation everywhere.

Well, after some surfing and such, it smells like an ignition switch.

I'll let you know how it works out.

Maybe ignition wiring?
When you had the flyscreen off did you notice if the ignition harness was rubbing on the horn bracket or bracket nut?
