I want to look into taking off my frame for a repair. Is there anything I should know that the Service Manual doesn't say with regards to engine rotation or frame removal? I was wondering if the swing arm/engine sag down when you remove the front end (ie. wheel/triple tree/shocks.)?? How many jacks will I need? Any parts that aren't normally replaced (gaskets I know will be..I'm talking hardware etc...)? Things like that...any links to engine rotation would be helpful too,...any special tools??? It is a big job and I have no idea what might be lurking when I get started.

The easiest way to think about it, is that the engine, rear wheel, and swingarm, are a single "unit", the drive unit.

The frame and frontend will come off of the drive unit, either as assembly, or by pulling the frontend first. You're kind of "cleaving" the bike into the front/upper half, and rear/lower half.

Put a jack under the motor at stock engine height (No need to pull the muffler, You don't need to rotate the motor to remove the frame). Strap the motor down so it doesn't move. Then unbolt the rear shock, wiring, fuel lines, tie-bars, airbox, and motor mount bolts. The frame just lifts off, either with or without the front end.

I see you're a tech. Thanks for the independent confirmation. I work on Apache Helicopters. The more I thought about how to remove the frame...the easier it actually got. In my mechanics mind...what you described is exactly what I thought. I needed some independent opinion from this site, to make sure I wasn't thinking too far out of the box. Thanks JOS

Here's half of mine - split exactly as John described.

Waiting for the engine... basically the engine/swingarm/rear wheel will be installed up and into the chassis/forks/front wheel.

I understand what he meant by jacking the engine to the point of original position as it is in an upright motorcycle. Is it a good idea to also put the swing arm in a rear stand or just the motor alone and the let the rear wheel set on the ground.?

I put the rear wheel in a chock, and a jack under the motor.

The wheelbone is connected to the swingarmbone is connected to the enginebone, thus holding all the bones vertical. And chicks dig vertical bones.
