Alright, so the first time I didn't think much of it, but now its happened two times and I'm a little peeved. So whats happened is that I'll be riding my bike, fuel light won't have come on, and I'll have about 100 miles on the trip odo, and I've been getting between 45-50 mpg. So I'll get to some destination, turn off the bike, then when I come back to start it, it'll sputter and cough, and one time never would start will I went and picked up some gas. The other time I was able to BARELY get it coughing and sputtering a couple blocks to the nearest gas station. Thing that frustrates me is that the fuel light hadn't come on, ran fine till I shut it off, and both time when I refilled it only took 2.5-2.7 gallons till it was full!?!? Anyone else had this happen to them? | ||

Nope. My light comes on with 1.1 gallons left in the tank, everytime. It seems that you have fuel, may be a problem with the fuel pump pickup or gas quality, like water in it or something (pure speculation) | ||

Are you getting any "engine" light when it's running rough? If so, the ECM will store the trouble code. You can then diagnose the problem based on the stored code(s). Like Chainsaw says, it sounds like there is fuel in the bike. Perhaps there's an issue with the pump, or injectors, or some sort of blockage in a fuel line somewhere? Hope this helps. | ||

Could be the pump, the check engine light doesn't come on, its really just like it is out of gas. The two incidents were seperated by a few weeks and the bike runs fine the rest of the time and even after I put some gas in those two times. Along the lines of fuel pumps, mine sure seems to whine a lot on startup, sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't, but I wasn't sure if thats an unrelated topic since the bike would run fine as soon as I put more gas in. | ||

My fuel pump was very loud when I first got the bike. Now, after about 3000 miles, the sound has dropped to normal levels. Paul in MI | ||

My supposition is the tank/frame amplifies the pump noises. And it's even more apparent on startup (when there isn't any engine noise competing with the pump) or when the tank is low (no gas acting as an insulator). This is normal, as far as I can tell. -Geof | ||

Question....When you open the cap does the tank make a "sucking noise???" If so check your vent.It is probably blocked or hose is pinched. | ||

No sucking sound. As for the Fuel pump, there's the nice happy priming sound it makes when you first turn the ignition on, but sometimes it makes a sickly whine that fluctuates and sounds "unhealthy" and will sometimes do that for a few minutes after starting up the bike. Don't know if thats related to the starting problem or not. The bike has almost 3k on it. Its an XB12R BTW. Doesn't make sense for the life of me. There's definitely gas in there. It just seems to be something about starting up the bike when its got around a gallon or less in it. It'll run fine till I shut it down, but then when I try to start it back up, it is unhappy until I put more gas in, then its fine. | ||

Almost sounds like the pump is vapor locked. | ||

My pump "whines" quite loudly while it's building it's initial pressure. Sounds sickly, really. Boulder, next time it happens make sure you check how much fuel it takes to re-fill. The tank holds approx. 3.7 gallons including reserve. If it takes that much, you know you've run it all out. If not, you've got fuel in there when the problem occurs. Also, check/replace the fuel filter for good measure. | ||

I did check it, read above, each time it was right around 2.7 gallons, so there's definitely fuel left, should be about a gallon. | ||

Yeah, I guess we already established that there's fuel in the bike. Does anyone know if the XB's fuel pumps use the "straw" type inlet(s) sticking up inside the tank/frame? That would be my next guess??? | ||

Thanks for the help guys. I'm just hoping to be armed with a little more info before I bother taking it to High Country to warranty it. |
