Well, I'm now in the right position to do it. I'm going to get a Buell. I've been looking at them for a long time and I really like the approach they have taken. When it comes to things like this, I'm a voracious reader and I've test driven an XB12s so far. I have some questions, however, that the sales guys just can't answer to my satisfaction. A little background first. I've had a steady diet of big bore jap bikes forever. Mostly all 'standard' bikes. I dig bored KZ's, I bought a V-max new years ago (now gone) and I have a 130HP ZRX1200r. I understand, appreciate, and enjoy good HP/wt ratios . I say all this not to brag, but to give you and idea of where I'm coming from. Now on to the Buell. I definitely want a naked XB and I've largely decided on an XB12S_ _. The big question is what letters, if any, to tack on after the S. On paper, I really think the Scg is the hot ticket. I'm after a good handling motorcycle. But, as a mere mortal, would I notice the difference between an Scg and a plain old S? Also, the ground clearance numbers (3.55) & the suspension travel (3.1f, 3.5r) on the Scg both seem really small. I'm sure it's fine, just a lot smaller than the S. So has anyone got any good time on both? Then there's this darned STT that keeps calling me. When I first saw one, I thought it was awful, but in the shops, I keep getting drawn to it. It has some drawbacks to me since I really dig the translucid and I would need a 2-up kit right away for taking the kids for a ride. Anyway, the STT is in the a distant third on my list, but I do find it a bit interesting. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Hemicbx York, PA |

Go with the S model. The Scg is a lowered version of the S. If not mistaken thats the only difference but a big one if your not vertically challenged. You may also want to look into the lightning long which adds a bit to the wheelbase. |

The SCG is the S, but with lower suspension and seat, hence less ground clearance and lean angle. The difference between the SS and STT other than cosmetics is different suspensions. The STT is taller, and has a longer travel suspension. Because of slow sales, many dealers were taking the STT and putting on the SS plastics and 2 up seat kit, effectively making it a tall SS. For 2009 the STT is gone, and the SS has the taller suspension now. Also to note, the SS and STT use a different frame and swing arm than the S, SCG, SX, SL. Buell’s are like Lego bikes, you can mix and match pieces. Here is my 2006 SS, with some STT pieces: Here it is today: |

Find em while you can, they have cancelled the XB12S and XB12Stt for 2009. Would be helpful to know your height, wt, inseam, riding with a passenger...? Riding offroad? |

Thanks for all the quick replys. I'm 5'10", 180, w/ 32 inseam. The S I tested fit me just fine. All of my riding is street & back (paved) roads and 99% is solo. I can get aggressive in the mountains, at least as much as the big Kaw would let me. I wasn't leaning toward the cg for the seat height, I just figured lower weight, more flickable. Hemicbx |

They all weight about the same. The SCG is 395lbs, The S is 395 The SS is 400 The STT is 400 You need a X if you want a portly bike |

Cityslicker-You must wake up every morning hoping to find a topic on here that you can hijack with another picture of your bike. How about giving it a rest? It's really not that easy on the eyes. I'd rather look at your likely inspiration...

WEll, I have an 09' XBSs and my wife has an 08' XBScg. I'm also 5'10" and when I ride her's it's like riding her old Blast! That thing is short! Mine is much more comfortable and easier for me to ride. Yes, her's is very flickable, but not as stable at hi speeds. Mine is plenty flickable but suits my hi speed riding style better. I can assure you that the Jap crotch rockets won't out 'flick' you in the turns. You'll catch them under hard braking and in switchbacks. Then they'll leave you on the straights....lol. |

Where you from ? If you get the TT suspension you will have a HOOT on gravel and dirt roads in your area. I think it's cool the suspension has at least been saved in the 09 SS because once you ride a TT and SCG on a crap road (I test rode both on potholes, dirt and gravel) there is absolutely NO comparison. BUT, if you are just a pavement carver and stay paved...don't bother. |
