2006 XB12R 10,000miles feels like the dogs are slipping in 3rd gear only with jerking and hesitating when loaded. Cruising speeds are okay. I did a pretty mellow low side on the left after hitting some water a couple months ago and I am wondering if anything may have been damaged that would decrease the engagement of the 3rd gear? thoughts? I did try the knowledge vault already and no replies to my post. thanks for considering, todd |

You're not alone. Shred's bike has the same problem, his hasn't been down though. If you have warranty, get it looked at. |

Odd, Shred bike pops out of gear when turning left, or jams up, while riding straight it is fine. Is this only in third gear?? have you checked out your belt?? Does it shift into gear smoothly?? |

yes only in 3rd, only under a load, belt is perfect, seems like its a bit more difficult to shift, I have to put a little more pressure on the lever, but it is smooth. I pulled the primary cover and everything inside looks normal... the shift lever and its pivot were bent pretty bad. sigh, this is a transmission problem right? no way its the lever. I will probably replace these items and see what happens |

Do the easy stuff first. Change the primary oil. Check your primary chain and make sure it's adjusted correctly. Make sure the clutch cable is ok, and adjusted correctly. Make sure that the shift shaft is ok and not binding. Anyone else can think of anything else? |

Well, it does sound fishy, like G said, try the easy stuff first. Splitting the cases is a pretty big job, but not too hard if you are mechanically inclined. Splitting the cases is my biggest complaint about the XB motor. |

You didnt happen to be in 3rd or 2nd gear when you lowsided were ya? with the shift lever being bent from the lowside, it could have been trying to go into 3rd gear and grinded he hell out of it. |

random- thats a horrible thing to say! i most likely was in 2nd during my low side. I have an 18month old and no baby sitters so my plan is to replace the shifter, pivot bolt and linkage and see what happens... splitting the cases is major surgery and i just dont have any free time |

Just a thought... Until time and money become available and you can fix it, might be best to stay out of 3rd to prevent doing any further damage. Rev high in 2nd and double shift up to 4th. |

That *might* work if you ride in the flatlands, *not* around here |

I remember trying to adjust my shifter awhile back. Playing with the adjustment arm and finally moving the splined piece on the shaft, trying different splines. It was so touchy, when I tried shifting it would shift easy in first then be real stiff in other gears then when I tried adjust things back it was opposite and wouldn't fully engage the gears, and also be real hard to try and get out of gears. My 2 cents is that if you don't have the right leverage on the shifter shaft while shifting it either will not engage fully in a gear, get stuck in a gear, and/or not want to down shift. You may not have all these symptoms but if you shifter was bent and your bike started having these problems after the lowside I'll bet you need a new shifter assembly |
