I remember when I was just a boy seeing harleys out and about. They would always rev their motors up at stop signs and lights. I always thought it was to keep the motor from dying or something.

I know better now and the "twitchy wrist" thread made me wonder how many guys here constantly rev their bikes at stop lights etc.

"what kind of bike is that?"
"it sounds like a harley"
"rev it up, i wanna hear it!"

I get this kind of stuff fairly often at a stop light - i'm sure we all do. I don't mess with the throttle while sitting still, but I've got no problem slipping the clutch a little extra and giving the person some ear-candy when the light goes green =]

Revving while sitting still can foul the plugs, right?

We gots' fuel 'jection, we don't need to blip!

Thems' old Harley's had a carb, some would need perpetual blipping to keep it from fouling out or just stalling.

False. I own a 44-year-old Harley that idles just fine without messing around with the throttle. If you have blip the throttle to keep your bike running, it's out of tune or broken.

Blipping the throttle a LOT on a cold engine might foul the plugs. On a hot engine this shouldn't be an issue.

I remember being at Americade one year, sitting on the strip watching all the bikes go by. Lots of traffic, so things were pretty slow. There was one guy on a FatBoy that I'll never forget. He was blipping the throttle so fast and so frequently (think at LEAST once per second, nonstop), I think he thought that right grip was his Johnson and he was going to get something out of it...

I don't blip much at stop lights, but when I do, it's because I want to hear it, not because the guy next to me does.

I take that back... when me and my bud are out riding, we rev a lot to just mess around - either he's on a Honda ST1300 which is near silent, and I'm on my Buell so I rub it in, or we have the Sportsters out and we just choose to make asses out of ourselves.

I'll blip the throttle on my Blast maybe once during a long stop light. Mostly to get some oil splashing around inside the engine.

I only do it when next to m brother who has an '08 CityX with stock exhaust : )

I also do it right before taking off- gets the motor off of its idle and I start releasing the clutch a bit as the revs ramp back down. I do not do it as you described above tho- just randomly reving it.

Ha I mostly do it when riding on campus just to turn some heads, which my straight exhaust does an excellent job of cuz its louder than my sporty and my fatboy combined and then some! Gotta love the vtwin! I mostly ride with guys that own Jap sport bikes so they rev their lil yoshis and I make em look bad by rolling around on American made

I'll do it if it's a busy light. Many people around here like to pick the shortest lane at the last minute or not want to be behind a truck. I want them to hear me. I like drowning out the home boys with the stereos as well.

Feather the clutch and roll on the throttle, how else you gonna get a big rooster tail on dirt and still keep her up right ?

I do it a few times before I take off so she doesn't misfire and try to drop me on my face.

It's going to be strange going back to a "finished" motorcycle. And not one they sell to you then refine on your dollar.

Blame the EPA- not Buell. Don't forget this is 1957 technology... maybe we should lobby for antique status and some kind of exemption from EPA regs.

"Revving while sitting still can foul the plugs, right?"

Only if you start it, rev it, shut it off. If you're out riding, this is a non-issue.

I'll free-rev once in a great while, but NEVER with the clutch lever pulled in. Of course, I rarely sit with the clutch lever in. Throwout bearings don't like it.

GUILTY! lol, I do it a bit, I rev match downshift while slowing so its useful there, but sitting at a light I'll give it a blip every 15-20 seconds or so, seems to keep it from wanting to stumble when I do finally take off. Two quick blips as the light goes green while feathering the clutch on the second blip for a nice smooth and rather loud start.

Mine is an 08 though with the stumbling issue, yeah blipping it does help. Biggest thing that helped with the stumbling was the stealership put in new plugs at the 5k check. Bike runs pretty damn good, and I don't think they flashed the ecm, I'll have to check the paperwork to be sure.

Best is when you do that with the local kawazuki crowd, drown them out and make them feel like they are riding an appliance : )

On my '08 it helps me launch better if I "blip" the throttle once just before moving out if I have been waiting for a "green" light.

If not, the bike has a 50-50 chance of stumbling when coming off idle.

I just figured it was a symptom of excessive masturbation when they're not on the bike. That's why they ride those giant "Compensation Machines" in the first place...

I dont do it very often but today there was a POS mustang that flew past me so he could beat me to the red light. when the light turned green he just sat there. So I gave it a little blip I think i pissed him off he just glared at me and took off really slow. so i gave him a good look at a power wheel as I passed him. Man I love my bike.

Seriously, is it possible to have two throttles?

I blipped mine a couple weeks ago while leaving the airport parking garage.

Set off probably 20-30 car alarms.

It's all about the simple pleasures in life!
