Off of the norm a bit here. I am enrolled at MMI Orlando and I am taking the Harley Davidson/Buell/Screaming Eagle program. Are there any current Techs on here that have taken the PHD's and could offer some advice with these test? | ||

i went to MMI (phoenix) about a million years ago my advice is to study, and study, and study. and then study. that test can be a real bitch, if you're not prepared. get your hands on as many bikes as possible, start a rebuild project after school, hell, take your own bike apart and put it back together, if you have to. if it dosen't have anything to do with wrenching on a bike, shit-can it until the test is over. good luck (Message edited by hr_puffinstuff on September 09, 2008) | ||

Yeah I took my first PHD's yesterday and failed them both. It pissed me off at first, but I took 3 more today and passed all of them which boosted my confidence. Believe me I have put everything that's not dealing with bikes to the side for the past 8 months and I got 7-9 months left, and I don't see things changing till I'm done with school. Cable, your best bet is to print out the test & reference materials ahead of time. Read the reference materials and then answer as many questions as possible on the printed test based on the reference materials, then watch the video and answer the remaining questions. Keep a finger on the pause button, you'll be rewinding quite a bit. Once you have all the questions answered on the written test, go online and take the actual test to score for your orange book. Thanks Odin, I guess I will have to print them out then. Will it affect anything if I log in to the test and enroll in it and then exit out with out doing anything. Won't that make it look like I'm taking multiple tests at once. | ||

As a HD Master of Technology, and Buell certified tech..... I can sell you all my answer sheets  Errr, nope, won't do that, because then you don't LEARN. Ha! Really, you just have to study up. I'm not an MMI grad, so I'm not sure of the conditions of the testing for the PHD's there, but I always kept a service manual for the subjects at hand on the table. The older PHD's suck, becaus the video material is not necessarily test material. New PHD's are a cinch. | ||

You can enroll in the test and close out of it with no problem, as long as you don't click "submit". It worked for me, you can give it a try and see how it goes. Hope this helps. | ||

Yeah I believe the VR1000 is still hanging out in there, I'm doing alright with the PHD's so far it just gets me frustrated cause I hate tests. This is why I wanted hands on training, but its a part of the deal I guess. It just feels like a lot cause they want 36 done in 6 weeks and we didn't really get a change the first week. | ||

i'm at MMI now in orlando. Cable as i'm sure you know once you get past Tech you have to do PHD's on your own time. to answer the question asked above there is like 65 phds over all you get Tech 1 and 2 to do 35 and the rest are requirements for other classes and you have to do one your own time. the VR1000 is still in the office. when you start MMI your in MTP and its not brand specific, you work on whatever the electives couldn't use it anymore. once you get into your elective (harley buell honda yamaha kawi suzuki) its worth it. i love going to school. | ||

Buellblastrider, I'm already attending MMI. I am in my second week of Tech II, I am aware of the "36" PHD's that are required for I and II. Some of them just seem difficult cause not all the info is in the video and I'm not always sure which manuals to look in but I'm doing alright I guess I got 3 done today putting me up to 8 total so far. What class are you in right now. | ||

Hey Cable, MMI orlando Buell rider here, Im all done with all my phds, Im currently in Screaming eagle 1 in the AM session. I had about 3/4 of them done when i was done with Tech 1 and 2. Do as many as you possibly can cuz you wont have anytime after those classes. Unless you dont have a job then Im sure you have all the time in the world. My advice: WATCH the video. Simple as it sounds everything is there right in front of you Step 1: Before you even start the video, Read over ALL the questions, and briefly think to your self about them and get familiar with them. Step 2: Start the video and watch and listen carefully, keeping the questions you just read over in your mind. If something pops up that sounds familiar, STOP the video and look over the questions to find what your looking for. Step 3: Even if something doesnt sound familiar, stop the video periodically and look over the questions again and you will more than likely see some of the questions have already been answered, or if you passed it you can always go back. Step 4: Dont fall asleep, it really wastes your time. Ahaha I have only not passed 6 of them by doing this method, and it might take some time, but you are here to learn Right? These PHDS have some very good information (most of them) and you will use it later on in school and in life. Enjoy! | ||

Ben782, I'm also in the AM session. Thats pretty much what I've been doing so far, reading, thinking, watching, rewinding, and answering. I think I have the system down pretty well. I do appreciate the advice. I'm actually not doing any of the PHD's in class I do them all after school I got like 8 hours to kill before I got to work. Class time is for hands on. So what are you riding? I have an 08 XB12R, some of us are getting together Saturday to ride out to Destination Daytona if your interested. | ||

I sure hope MMI is better then there sister school UTI!!!! I went to UTI about 5 years back. What a waste of money!!! I can honestly say I learned very little from UTI that I didnt already know from my 2 year high school auto tech class. But then again, my auto tech class wasnt like most out there. Me and 2 other buddies used to hang out with the teach on the weekends and help in his home shop with about a dozen different projects at a time. But maybe that was just me... I did good, turned a 3.95 GPA, 99.7% attendance, can actually turn a wrench (tech for Mercedes for 4 years) But man, flag hour is NOT the way to live your life! Warranty sucks!! but It might be different in the bike world. for you...I hope it is very different!!!! |
