2006 XB12scg

While doing some highway riding the instrument cluster died. The odometer was blank and the gauges resting at zero. The high beam indicator worked. Everything was still running fine.

2 miles later...

The bike gently dies and has check engine and oil light.

First thing i did was check the battery cables. They were on snug, so i removed them to hopefully reset some computer glitch. Upon reconnecting the battery the gauges reset. The instrument cluster came to life when i turned the key, but the engine just clicks. It clicks but the engine does not turn over.

Help me please. Battery was charged at the beginning of the season, but I have it on trickle charge now.

Yep stator/VR. Odds are your 77 connector melted frying them. Common issue with the Uly's. It happened to my SS, I caught it early so I dropped it off at my dealer to take care of it. : )

Jake backorder is gone, dealer got both my stator and VR in a week. But a week is a long time for them to usually get stuff.

Update.

Charger indicated battery was at 10%. So hopefully it was just the battery, but why did it die so soon? I charged it not more than 4-6 months ago.

I did the dual headlight mod. I normally don't have them both on, but today i rode 6 hours with both headlights blazing. Could this have unusually drained the battery?

Grounded fine.

I'll look into the Voltage Regulator. Not sure what the 77 connector is, but i'm browsing the repair manual now.

Doubt it. I run both mine the entire time every time I ride. I haven't had any problems. If the battery was that weak something is obviously being drained by something. Check all cables for chaffing.

I run both lamps always, actually I have never turned them off and the only Issue I have had was the 77 connector, caught it in time to save the VR and Stator too!

4-6 months is a long time for a battery to sit. I would charge it up, go for a ride, then recheck it.

Check the voltage at the battery with the bike at about 2500 RPM. You can buy a cheap volt meter pretty much anywhere. If the voltage on the voltmeter goes up somewhere around 14.0 volts your charging system is fine, replace battery. If it doesn't change at all you might have a charging system problem.

While you're checking the manual, look at the starter system. You said you only heard one click, there's two. One from under the scg seat and the other from the starter. Under the seat are the relays and the wires there are really packed together. Green is to the starter. Check them out.

I just had my regulator go out and it was the same as you described if you have the extended warenty it should be covered. as a side note the guys at skip fordyce fixed it for me and were on top of every thing. sucks i have to send my bike to a shop over an hour away when there is one less the 5 miles from were i live but Im kind of use to that by now. but i digress.

Socal I know the feeling the dealer here said they couldn't touch it til the 15th I'm like uhh that's not gonna work so... 54miles later it's at another dealer. Here's the real kicker tho when I dropped off the bike I told them there is 2 stators and 3 regulators in the same state with the closest regulator not 30 minutes away what do they do ??? order from Milwaukee of course This was last Friday they ordered it supposed to have been here today. So I call to get a status update well he puts me on hold to see whats up I'm like thinking ok it's not there he comes back and asks if he can call me back I'm like ok long story short they sent a driver to the dealer 30min away to get the freakin regulator I told them was there when I dropped off the bike.

Strmvt, must be nice! Ha I waited a month on mine to come in before I finally found out it was on backorder after reporting the wait and rudeness of the dealer to buell and was told to take mine somewhere else, nearest dealer is 3 hours away so I just outright bought the regulator and had it shipped and installed in 3 days! So just be glad your dealer was just ignorant instead of dicks like mine.
