Dropped the bike for the first time just a few minutes ago. Was moving the bike under an awning here at work because it started raining and when I came to a stop went to put my left foot down and my pants leg got caught on the peg. Well bike fell over easy I kind of helped it not fall so hard. Only thing damaged was the left side foot-peg snapped off.

Was sitting there feeling how retarded I was and noticed that it started leaking oil. It was leaking out of the clutch inspection cover and running down under the bike and dripping. I'd say at least 5 or 6 ounces leaked out. It seems to have stopped leaking, I wiped it off with some paper towels. I'm going to go back out a check and see if it's still leaking in a little while.

Is there supposed to be a gasket there that might be leaking, that I need to replace? or is it just leaking because the bike was laying on it's side, or did I tweak something when it fell and it's going to be expensive to replace? I know the oil level in there normally isn't that high to leak out the cover, and it's never leaked before.

Well went back out to look and it's still leaking, looks like i've lost about 12 ounces total. Took a flashlight this time, and the shifter was bent back and actually dented the primary cover right under the clutch inspection cover, so I'm guessing that I'm going to have to replace the entire primary cover. Fun!!! expensive parts. Anyone have any idea how much a primary cover costs?

oohhh. sorry to hear that.

uuhhhh... try e-bay, i know the 9 covers are bought like after-market parts to 'murder-out' the 12's.

yes, there is a gasket under the inspection cover. i'd just gob some RTV sealant on it until you can get your new cover.

I had the sam thing happen when a lady hit my bike in a parking lot. took some rtv adn slapped it on then ran 350 mile back home to my spare primary cover.

Just try a new gasket under the cover and that should fix it. Same thing happened to me and new gasket fixed the leak problem. If that doesn't work, then replace the cover but I bet it fixes it.

Oil is not going to keep leaking out the clutch inspection cover unless the bike is running. Even then it shouldn't leak much if at all. I've reused that gasket several times and mine doesn't leak. I'm sure if I laid the bike over on it's side it would.

Bummer, sorry to hear it. I remember my first lay-down well. Put a dent in the tank of my brand spankin new 95 Yamaha YZF600. Ouch.

I'm guessing that you don't really have 12 ounces that have leaked out- that's almost all of the fluid, and there's really no way for it to leak out of that cover. Just keep an eye on the level, but I would also caution you against riding it until it is sealed up somehow-you don't want moisture getting in there and corroding things. RTV should do it, and a new gasket may very well fix all your troubles.

I ordered a new gasket (it seems that neither one of the two dealers in town never have any parts in stock) and will see if that works in the meantime I went and got some of the red high temp RTV and put a bead of that on the cover to see if it seals it up until I get a new gasket.

In case anyone is wondering I sent an e-mail to appleton Buell and they quoted at around 250 for a new primary cover, clutch cover, and all the gaskets.

$250 ain't that bad. I was thinking more like $400. Did you remove the clutch cover to use the rtv?

I messed up my 1st primary cover by cross threading the oil plug (moron!). I bought one brand new for aobut $250. My 2nd one got messed up when a retaining clip gave out in the clutch assembly and the shrapnel broke out flanges built into the primary to nest the ramp and ball assembly. I got the replacement for that one on eBay for $125 in almost new shape (There were expected boot scuffs on it from the shifting). Good luck...

XB Primary Cover . . . 250 with gaskets.
Ducati 800cc Monster Primary Cover . . . 500! (no gaskets)

Had a friend that recently parked his Duc' in a parking lot. Was knocked over by a cager not looking. It even bent his steering lock mechanism. Laid down cost a total of 1100 in parts. OUCH!
