Its a 04 xb12r. New Battery,new voltage reg. I guess to my understanding the fuel pump is not whining when the key is turned. More less has a grinding sound to it. The bike when you hit the start button just clicks.... won't turn over. What could be the issue. A guy called me up that met me on the road after exchanging numbers some time back is having this problem. Trying to help him.

Im the one that has the problem with the XB12R, when the key on, the fuel pump doesnt whine like it normally does, instead all i hear is a very quiet rumbling/grinding sound, the starter still kicks in when you press the starter button, but the bike doesnt start, please help me!!!!

i would start w/ a bad ground (new battery is something loose)starter just clicking sounds like a bad ground to me.

Double check your battery connections, sometimes, happened to me, when you install a new one, you don't tighten the down enough and they loosen.

Low battery could do it too.

Also a Multimeter is your best friend in these situations................

He's told me the battery is tight. I'm almost wondering if he has a stator problem. He also said all fuses and relays are fine.

jump it, let it run, shut it down after a long ride. If you go back and try to restart and the battery is flat, then the stator may be the culprit. Even if it's a stator, the starter would still try to start the bike if the battery was charged.

You need to start the bike to test the stator. Also the stator will not prevent the bike from starting.

Check to see if the battery has any juice first and foremost.

What is the battery voltage while trying to start the bike? Hook up your meter then try to start it. While trying to start it what is your voltage?

Also the starter has the solenoid built into the starter. It has two contacts that will wear thin and not allow the plunger to complete the circuit on for the starter motor even if the solenoid is operating.

This can also create the situation of the stater "CLICKING" but not turing over. However this would not explain the fuel pump issue.

I tested the stator it is putting out the correct voltage, replaced the battery with a brand new one, grounded the voltage regulator using star washers on both sides of all four screws, and checked all three grounds on the frame, and also snugged down the battery cables, the grinding/rumbling noise is still coming from the fuel pump, and it still doesnt start, but starter still engages.

ECMSpy will do a diagnostic on the pump. I'm not exactly sure what it checks when it does this but it's worth a try.

brand new doesnt always equal good, you could have got a bad one right off the shelf. you really need a multimeter in this situation to find out where your voltage is going.

did you charge the new battery? I would hook up a jumper from a car and see if it starts. If the problem continues even with the jumper on it check fuses for poor connections or key switch problem the problem sounds like not enough voltage.

There should also be a relay click that's audible if nothing else is running. On the R, you'll hear it from the black box on the left of the fairing (fuse box is on the right).

If you can hear that clicking, check underneath. There's a solid green wire, that goes to the starter, solenoid. On mine there was a bit of wear which I taped. Could be your issue.

Try checking the fuel pump, grinding/ rumbling doesn't sound right. I bought a 06 wrecked bike for parts, and I couldn't get it started, when I turn the switch on I noticed the fuel pump wasn't making the usual wine, just a faint rumble. I pulled the fuel pump, and it was completely clogged with gooey stuff (I don't know how else to put it). Since it was a parts bike I just tossed it aside. If when you turn the key and flip on the switch you don't hear the pump wine, then you'll probably need to check it. The pump needs to build pressure in the line before the motor starts.
