Ok so when the fuel light comes on and the fuel meter trips over and starts counting.. How many miles can i run with the light on before it runs out and im pushing to the gas station. Have a 08 XB12R with just at 900 miles on it.. | ||

08........not many. On my XB9 I can get 30 mile before getting pretty nervous. I've yet to run out though. | ||

In town,I've gotten 33 miles. On long country roads, I ended up getting 43 miles with .2 gallons left. I was sweating it and drafted off friends doing 50 to South Lake Tahoe. I thought about shutting off the motor on the downhills, but didn't think it was a good idea if the twisties came up quick. | ||

i've gone to 30mi. just do the math...if your fuel light comes on at 120mi, you're getting about 40mpg....now you have .75 gal. to go. how far is it gonna get ya depends how you're ridin. | ||

Do the math with the fuel light on, ha. Drop one, carry 2, watch out for soccer mom. I can barely do that kind of math in a class room let alone at 70mph. Mine came on in the middle of nowhere, NY. All my stuff's in kilometres so I'm trying to remember from a previous thread, which said something like twenty miles, and convert that to metric. Twenty miles give me how many k? Bigger number or smaller number? Fortunately, I found myself in Genoa 11 clicks later so all was good. | ||

I've found when my light clicks on, it takes 2.5 gallons to fill it up. That would leave me with 1.2 gallons. I should be able to get about 60 miles out of that but I haven't pushed it. | ||

On my '04 XB12R I have strapped a gas can to the back seat and ridden until the bike ran out of gas twice. Both times I went over 30 miles on the light. I don't remember the specific numbers, but at least one of them was in the 32.x range. I averaged ~45mpg out of that tank, so that number may go up slightly under steady cruise. The '08 has a slightly larger fuel tank, but I don't know how (or if) that would affect the reserve range. I'd bet that you're good on the light for at least 20 miles. In any case, you're only a gas can and a bungee cord away from knowing for sure. | ||

Ya the '08 has like a 3.75 gal tank.. with the .75 gal as the reserve. Its still pretty new and in break in stage.. so i guess i wont get as good gas miles as others. I just dont wanna be seen pushing my bike.. But i guess id rather push my American made Buell than ride a Jap bike. So when the gas light comes on.. if my fuel trip meter hits 15-20miles i better start looking for a gas station then right. | ||

So just curious question for the mechanics out there... I've been told that it is not wise to run a fuel injected engine out of gas. Does that only relate to car engines, or would it relate more to running them dry, and then leaving them for an extended period of time without fuel in them? I try not to even come close to running out for fear of harming the injection system. Of course, that's not always an option. We all love to ride until the light comes on, and then pull out the GPS to find the closest filling station! Thanks for the reply | ||

I did a couple hundred miles last weekend and was getting almost 56 MPG on my '03 9S...now we have to take into consideration that I was riding with my father in law and his Road King...so we weren't exactly a ball of fire, but I thought that was good for mileage. | ||

I have managed 30 miles after the fuel light came on at 155 miles on my '08TT, but I was definitely sweating bullets. As to running a fuel injected system dry, two possible issues. If the fuel pump is located in the tank, as they are in our Buells, the fuel helps cool and lubricate the pump, Running it dry may damage it. And if the system is run dry, then air gets into the lines and injectors, and needs to be purged before the engine will run smoothly again. Not all that big a deal on our bikes, but if the fuel tank is 12ft from the engine, and the fuel rail is feeding 6-8 cylinders, it does take a bit of work. | ||

Like XBniner, i'm only able to get 2.5 gallons in when the light comes on..... guessing there is 1,2 left but been told if you run it dry it craps out the fuel pump. | ||

Iamarchangel: conversion from miles to kays is pretty easy. take the original miles, divide it by 2 and add that to the start total, then add one tenth of the start total again, and you have your kays. So, for 30 mph, 30/2=15, 30+15=45, then 1/10 of 30 is 3. 45 +3 = 48 kays. One kay is 5/8 of a mile, so convert off that. In your case 20 miles gives 32 kays (20/2=10, 20+10=30. 1/10 of 20=2, 30+2=32). Make sense? | ||

Yea, like I wrote, 1 kay is 5/8 of a mile... I don't know many people who can calculate .625 x 30 in their heads, but most people I know can divide 30 by 2, and 30 by 10. I think they could also add 30 + 15, and 45 + 3, so I guess people will work it out he way they want...each to their own! Interestingly, your .625 value will only convert kays to miles, you would need the inverse to go from miles to kays...which, strange enough, is 1.6. I can only go 90 miles on a tank of gas before my light comes and I have a 4.5 gal tank and when I put gas in it usually tops out at 3 gallon with a 1.5 reserve left, but I also have a lot of motor work done. I have averaged my gas at 30 to 35 mpg.  | ||

just did the bikers for babies ride in kansas city.. filled my bike up in the morning before i left.. drove 35 miles up there.. did the 75-80 mile ride got back to the meeting place.. (kansas speedway) had 115 miles on the trip meter and the gas light never came on.. but i filled up before i went back home just to be safe. | ||

I've been getting right at 50 mpg on my '07 STT with race can and race ecm. I can go about 180 miles before the light comes on, then it takes about 3.5 gals to fill up again. No complaints here... | ||

I got 53.3mpg on my last tank, but I was being stupid for some of those miles. I think I could get 60mpg easy on my commute to work. Maybe all 08 owners ride like hooligans? | ||

My fuel light comes on early, usually with a little more than a gallon left. The farthest I've gone with the low light is 30 miles. Could have gone farther if I wanted to. Bear, I have an '08 Firebolt like you do. (Message edited by boltrider on September 17, 2008) |
