I read somewhere that early 08 ecm's can be tuned with ecmspy, and that later 08's can not. If this is true, how can I tell if mine is b4 or after the change? Any help is appreciated. I plan on a special ops soon, but I am nervous to do the filter until I can map.

Why are you nervous?

The ecm will compensate/learn and your bike will not run lean.

If the O2 shows a lean condition the ecm will adjust to bring it back to where it needs to be.

Hey Cheese,

Thanks for your response. I'll try to answer that question, while I wait for someone to answer mine.

My understanding is that the ecm will enrich the entire map if it detects a lean condition while "learning" in closed loop. If I am correct, this is designed to compensate for changes in ambient conditions; temp and pressure.

I guess, if I knew that altering the airflow through the engine, by changing the can, leaned the all cells of the map equally; and then changing the filter also leaned the whole map equally, I would let the issue go and I wouldn't be nervous.

But, what if I get a long enough stretch of highway, and I'm doing 135-140 mph, and the the higher throttle position and o2 value is where "My" map is leanest?

If I burn up my engine because I am a hooligan and I push it hard, I can live with that. If I burn it up because I didn't tune it right, that just makes me an a**. Well I might be an a** either way, but I'll feel better if I know I tuned it right.

Blacklightning,
As soon as Odie mails my exhaust can back it will be installed along with a K&N filter on my 08. If the engine grenades on me I'll let you know.

Yes, the early 08s can be tuned with ecmspy. I am not sure of the date of manufacture at which ecmspy would no longer work.

My 08 XB12R has a Spec Ops can with stock ecm and air filter. Works fine, no problems!! If you check the sponsor section, you can contact Odie and he will give you instructions on what you need to do to after you install the pipe so the ecm learns.
