I removed my belt guards a few months ago. On removing my back wheel to replace the tyre I was astonished at the amount of tyre that has found it's way onto the rear pulley and onto the tensioning pulley - I'll try to post pictures later - I use the bike mainly on the track so there is a lot more tyre debris involved but I'm wondering if this can contribute to belt failure?
Anyone else had experience of this?

Yes. I have experienced it and I have heard it can aide to belt failure, but have not had it happen to me.

When I do track days I try and clean up after each run.

I believe someone racing a Buell had a belt failure because of the build up of track snot.
It may have been more than a year or so ago.
I read about it in the racing section, but can't find the thread now.
It may not have been a thread, just a comment made by one of the racers after a DNF.

Glitch, I'm pretty sure that was this years Moto ST event at Daytona... or was it the 200 itself? But it was definitely an 1125r with belt drive...

It was at Daytona Moto ST.
Major build up and think it caused
probs in the pit while changing
it all out.
Had signs off it on my 1 and only
track day.
