Took a 2009 XT for a 100 mi ride today. Loved it. I plan on purchasing an XT and riding to Alaska. One concern I have is if a tire had to be replaced or repaired in a remote area. Most bikes can be equipped with a center stand but I don't see any way to mount a center stand on an XT because of the muffler location. I was originally planning on doing the trip on a GS but the XT is liter and has less things to go wrong. The XT has all the power of a GS and runs every bit as smooth. I own a BMW R1200RT so I have knowledge of both bikes.

The muffler is stout enough to support the bike- there are jacking points marked on it. People have been able to shove a rock or log under the muffler and prop the bike up on the sidestand to remove a wheel when necessary. Note that the belt can be changed without jacking up the bike or removing a wheel.

I'm sure someone with the talent and tools could figure out how to build a centerstand that mounts to the muffler, but so far, nobody's found that necessary.

You have taken delivery of a 2009 XT already? My Buell dealer is telling me that he won't be able to get one till later this year if not spring.

What have you seen for mileage on the 2009 so far?

Thanks for the info, I hope to purchase a 2008 or order a 2009 tomorrow.

Maybe I'm experiencing cranial flatulance, but, how do you remove a belt without jacking up the bike or removing the wheel ? I know I can do it with a pair of dykes but I don't think that's what you mean.

well, assuming your belt broke(which would be your only reason for changing it), that gets rid of half the problem. then all you have to do is remove the piece of the swingarm, take the front pulley cover off and the right peg mount. then you put the belt on the front pulley. get it started on the rear pulley, and walk the bike forwards. it will track its self right on to the rear pulley.

if need be i can have a new belt on my bike on the side of the road in about 5 minutes.

No_rice, I'll take your word for it that works but that kind of goes against all the factory recommendations for handling the belt to prevent premature breakage.

The method I've seen touted here is to loosen the rear axle pinch bolt, and back out the rear axle ~30 (?) turns, which moves the tapered portion of the axle out of the wheel bearing on that side, letting the wheel move forward ~1/4 inch, which takes most of the tension off the belt. Otherwise, follow your method. Once the belt is on the rear pulley and tracking straight, reinstall the swingarm section and retighten the rear axle.

i wouldnt say that is the way it should be changed all the time. especially the 03 design, but the belt that has actually lasted the longest besides the original one(as far as my green 9 is concerned) was put on that way.

if you are sitting in your shop and have the ability to pull the wheel i would. if you are on the side of the road, get it on and get moving!

I think the hardest part of changing your belt on the side of the road would be actually getting the belt. Who rides around with a spare belt.

Anyways back on topic...
I searched and couldn't find anything for a buell, or even a sportster for that matter, for the center stand. It looks like if you want one you'll probably have to make it.

Thanks for the info on the belt. I will be traveling alone to Alaska so I will be carrying an extra belt. The dealer tells me it's not necessary because the new belts are made from a compound that will not break. A center stand would facilitate the changing of a belt so I am going to continue to look at the possibility of installing a center stand. Biffdotorg, I rode an 09, did not make up my mind yet on purchasing one. Still considering the BWW 1200 GS. Also waiting to see the BMW 800 GS. I totally enjoyed the XT. Hard decision.

Lmao, what’s next? Oil that never needs to be changed?

The belt is strong, it *should* last the life of the bike. The highest mileage that I have heard with an original belt was just fewer than 50k miles, and it broke from a wreck. That was the 2006 belt. They claim the 2009's are better, so we shall see.

I remember seeing somewhere that someone makes a fold-up rear stand (swingarm lift). It might be easier to customize one of those (and tote it) than designing/fabricating a center stand for an under-engine exhaust motorcycle.

HD, at one time, made a replacement belt that actually screwed together...I had for my '83 Lowrider..it went with the bike (still un-opened) when I sold it with 45k on the speedo!!
