Worked last week on NY trip.

Today first time back on bike.

Speedo not working. Odo and trip can read but numbers not moving. Tach works. Clock works. Engine just tickety as usual.

Any quick ideas, I've got a busy night ahead and I'd like to ride it tomorrow.

Manual says check backlight, never noticed a backlight before, if that's out, then fuse is out. I'll check that first anyway. Then, I think, it's wire hunting.

Checked fuse: no problem that I can see.

Checked for backlight: it's there.

It did the start up sweep so nothing mechanical.

If the distance on the odometer isn't changing either then obviously the wheel speed sensor is broken.

As Damnut has posted....it's more than likely the Speed Sensor.

Not necessarily "obviously".

Admittedly, I'm still working on learning the electronics.

The speed sensor goes to the ecm. If there was no input, the ecm would register that.

The engine ran fine so problem is after ecm.

At least, that's my understanding of the process.

Am I missing something here?

Don't really mean to sound argumentative. I'd like to just walk out and look for a specific wire connection that came loose but I know what real life is like.

iamarachangel I see you have 03. they were known to burn out speed sencers. When mine went out no codes. just stopped working. Some people have had luck removeing theres and cleaning it. The new ones have a resister built in so they dont frie from voltage spikes. good luck. Only 1 bolt holds it in easy to get at.

I know no one wants to spend 50 or 60 dollars for a part without being absolutely certain it needs to be replaced. I have an 03 XB9R same as you. In my experience with speed sensor issue's and I am on my third sensor, my bike has never run poorly because the speed sensor went bad, and it has not set a code when the sensor went bad either. Speed sensor issue's on early XB's was weak point, Buell made up a rewire kit and new speed sensor for this problem. I hope you get lucky and "just walk out and look for a specific wire connection that came loose" and it works for you.

So I re-read the manual and see that, although the sensor goes to the ecm, it doesn't appear to be one of the calculations for fuel.

Okay, for those that had success cleaning it, what did that involve? Anything else besides taking it out, looking for grunge and then WD40?

brake cleaner should work well, maybe carb cleaner as well.

If the sensor needs cleaning, it will sort of look like it has the same type of debris that collects on the the magnetic drain plug thats in the primary. Basically remove the sensor, wipe it off, reinstall and give it a try.

Just out of curiosity what is the sensor sensing? Speed, I know, but where is the button/magnet/trigger/whatever it is reacting to?

I believe it senses the rotation speed of the main drive gear, which is inside the cases opposite the output sprocket.

Correct. Gunter confirmed this in a earlier post.

Well, I took out the sensor and there was a couple of flecks of debris, not much. Cleaned it and put it back so no change.

I tried to track some wires but nothing significant. The local service rep said to check the wires first so I guess the fairing comes off next.

Oh, well.

Vehicle Speed Sensor it is. $CDN86, ten minutes to change (yeah, one bolt, and another five to get the connector out) and a bit longer fiddling around with the snake pit of wires under the sprocket cover. Now, I'm legal again.

So, to those who suggested replacing it, sorry if it sounded like I doubted you. Got a chance to learn more about this bike.

Somebody had been in there before, hmmm. That leads to two more questions:

Screws and holes look a bit messy, anybody have the thread size handy so I can get a tap and die and clean them up?

Anybody have a picture of an untouched wire setup beneath the sprocket cover? The manual has some pics but they're not clear enough.

Thanks for your input.

Figure 3-55, 3-56 and 7-21, 7-25 in the service manual are descent pic's. You could run a tap into the holes for the hardware that attaches the sprocket cover. I would only run a tap into the speed sensor mounting screw hole if it is a blind hole, I do not remember if it is or not. Since you are an expert now, you could check and see. I would not do it if it's a through hole unless it absolutely needs to have the threads chased, because the is no sure way of keeping the thread debris from entering the transmission.

I really thought there would be pictures of a lumpy guy in an inadequate bathing suit.

Morbid curiosity drove me to click on it.

Rsh: thanks, 3-55 is the picture I needed, text made it sound like vss is behind the other connectors but pics didn't show that. (I have the '05 Service manual pdf).

The thread chaser question was for the sprocket cover screws. The vss bolt looked clean.

Phoi: you're a sick puppy, you know that, don't you?
