Author Message   Scbuellkat Posted on Friday, August 08, 2008 - 06:10 am:        I am planning to get my wheels powder coated and I need to remove the bearings. How many times can you remove the bearings and replace them in the wheel. The bike only has 8500 miles and the rear wheel bearing was on the bike when a took a look at it so I dont know how many miles it has on it. The front bearing only has about 4500 miles on it, because they were not in the wheel when I took a look at the bike. I believe it would be fine to reuse the bearings since there are not that many miles on them. I also dont know right now how much it would cost to replace them but it would also be a good time to get new bearings since they would already be out of the wheels. Just looking for some advice/opinions. Thanks.   Speedfreaks101 Posted on Friday, August 08, 2008 - 06:36 am:        Due to the method of removal you must replace them each time they are removed. Radial ball bearings like what are used in our wheel bearings are not designed to deal with the type of side load that the removal causes. Removal typically causes damage to the cage that holds the balls and it is not always detectable. Take the time to get a good quality bearing and call around for a bearing made in USA, Japan or France (no China).   Gentleman_jon Posted on Friday, August 08, 2008 - 06:41 am:        Get new bearings. As you suggest, there is only a limited number of times that bearings can be replaced, so it doesn't make much sense to reuse them. I changed mine when I powder coated my wheels, too. Wear on the wheels can be reduce by freezing the bearings and heating the wheel so the bearings go in easier. They are inexpensive, especially if you buy them at a bearing supply instead of your dealer who probably doesn't have them anyway. The bearing numbers, if I recall properly, are: front 6006 2RS C3. Rear: 600 2RS C3. Applied.com has been previously mentioned as a bearing source. The rear bearings are 6006-2RS and its dimensions are: 30x55x13. Here is a link for a source on Ebay http://stores.ebay.com/BEARING-BARGAINS. If you pull the bearings always replace them.
