This is a true story.

An acquaintance of mine purchased a set of the weld-on frame sliders like the national race XB’s use. He sent the frame and sliders to a welding shop along with instruction on where to blob them on. What he neglected to tell the Bubba The Welder was that the frame also serves as the gas tank. I’m sure you can see where this is going………Bubba strikes his first arc and gets a much bigger flash that he is accustomed to along with hot frame particles as the beautiful XB frame behaved in a manner similar to a hand-grenade. I’m told that Bubba survived the incident with only minor burns, but is looking to insert a set of frame sliders somewhere up my acquaintance where the sun don’t shine.

he he, thanks for the info, but I meant where was he going to put the sliders? Just a pathetically failed attempt at humor, don't mind me :).

Dude, that's awful !, but funny as hell. I'm glad no one was hurt. That could have been serious.

Bubba strikes his first arc and gets a much bigger flash that he is accustomed to along with hot frame particles as the beautiful XB frame behaved in a manner similar to a hand-grenade.

And thus begins another urban legend. Gasoline it often credited with having attributes similar to gun powder. Unlike gunpowder it needs to be mixed with large amounts of oxygen before it will burn.
Prior to welding leaks those huge gasoline storage tanks you see are filled with fuel to prevent explosions.
But what the heck, it could be based on a true story dreamed up by a fictional screen writer's, wife's, sister's, husband's cousin Bubba who once used moonshine to light a fire in the Lesser Antillies and caught his pants on fire.

Urban Legend?? It would have went boom if the fuel level was below the line where he was welding...

The acquaintance in question is not a complete dumb-ass, he did drain the frame of fuel!!

Agree, Gasoline itself does not burn. Gasoline vapor does.

That's what did it... I'm certainly not a tank welder, but shouldn't he have filled it and welded at the lowest temp he could? I believe that's the "safe" way to weld a fuel tank.

Please don't quote ME though :).

LOL...no, the safe way is to drain it and air it out, not fill the damned thing!

I welded ( acetylene ) my off-road car tank, ones or twice ( I keep hitting rocks with it )
Drained it and even washed it out with water, it still keeps blowing up.
It’s was a funny light explosion and it did blow the dent’s out off the tank

Sounds logical to keep the tank full, no air no explosion,
But I don’t have the gut’s to try it !
same thing as in putting out a cigarette in a pool off gasoline ( did try it )

btw,
I assume that Mr. Bubba had a cold and didn’t smell a thing or didn’t had a clue what that filler cap/ fuel pomp fitting’s where doing on a hollow frame !!

I certainly don't want to get anyone murdelized, but I'm pretty sure that most people who weld gas tanks regularly will fill them as full as they can. The other thing to remember with the XB frames (from what I hear) is that they have a liner of some sort in the frame?? Welding can damage this?

Throwing the XB down on welded on frame sliders could result in more damage than using protective covers on the frame. But if you felt compelled to weld frame sliders to an XB frame/tank, the correct method would be:

1. Drain the fuel and flush with water.
2. Fill the tank with water leave the cap off to prevent steam pressure build up and weld. The water in the tank will help absorb heat and help prevent heat damage to the interior of the tank.
3. Drain water from the tank.
4. Flush the tank several times with alcohol to absorb residual water.
5. Go test the frame sliders and repeat as necessary.

Welding aluminum without knowing the exact weld alloy needed to match the frame and slider alloy is an iffy proposition at best.

The story of Bubba's Bonfire is somewhat entertaining but is nearly as believable as Bill Clinton.

A few years back, in Macedon NY, 2 lives were lost in a garage when they used oxygen from a welding tank to re-inflate a truck tire that had fix a flat in it. NOT pretty according to the local firemen.

To weld gas tanks, use S32002's technique, or risk all.

Which woman did he not have sex with?
