I asked a question about toll roads a while ago and got some good responses. That thread is in the archives.

So the trip might happen tomorrow.

It will be my first long trip on any bike, let alone on the XB9R. For that reason, I want to stick to the highways. I'm also coming in from Ontario, Canada, so that makes me a stranger in a strange land.

I'm actually heading to north of Ithaca, somewhere around the Cayuga Heights area.

From the interstate, 96 runs along the lake, 34 runs through Auburn and 34B splits the difference.

This will come up about hour 5 so I'll probably be tired and not as sharp as I'd like. I'm planning lots of breaks but I feel that I'd like to avoid city as well as urban, stop every block, areas.

Some of you seem familiar with that area. Any ideas?

I'm from the area; taking the Weedsport exit of the NYS Thruway (I-90) to Route 34 and then picking up 34B in the very small town of Fleming is your best bet. 34 takes a straight shot through Auburn, so it shouldn't be too confusing and 34B is pretty smooth all the way to Cayuga Heights.

Good luck; if you'd like my phone number, send me a PM and I'll give it to you.

Depending where you are coming from in Canada, you may wanna try going thru Gananoque / Watertown. I grew up in Whitby, On. That's the way I always went... The 1000 Islands are very nice to see going over the bridge.

By the way, if you're going to be in the area, you absolutely positively HAVE to stop here for lunch or dinner:

Thanks to all.

I just got back, a bit wiped. It works out to be about a 10 hour trip if I take the advice, which I did, of having a break about every 100 kilometres.

Route 34 is a very pretty road and a treat to ride on. My destination was actually just off 34 so that worked out very well.

The trip down was nice weather, staying about 120 kmh all the way. Coming back was very windy, at 120, I was getting really buffeted. Weather was nicer in Canada. Maybe I'll think about a different screen.

Odd thing: usually I have trouble getting across the border. In fact, I've been refused a couple of times. This time, I never even had to take off my helmet or sunglasses. I had more questions coming back into Canada, go figure, it's easier if I go disguised, ha.

I guess the trip meter rolls over because when I got home all it read was 108 kilometres. Somebody else will have to help me with that.

Another thing: I had the border to I-90 on masking tape to the "tank". It rained, now the glue is sticking to the plastic. Any ideas on how to get that off?

The tripometer only goes up to 999 miles, i would assume the same with KM. Oh and to make border crossing easier, wear a sombrero : )

WD-40 will get the adhesive off.

So that would make it about 1107 clicks for about 688 miles. Ouch.

So, bad math: total fuel cost was about $65, mostly US fuel. It looks like maybe $4.43 a gallon. That would mean about 14.7 gallons total. It looks like I averaged 46.8 miles to the gallon.

That doesn't look so good but the math is skewed a little bit by two traffic jams on the Canadian side, especially the long uphill on the clutch at the Peace Bridge. The math is also going to be way off because of the almost $5.20 a gallon for super in Canada.

Still, not too shabby. I think the real number would be over 50mpg.

Hmm, played around a bit more trying to do conversions. I came up with 12.5 gallons and that results in 55mpg.
