in my eternal quest to find my gremlin of poor intermittent performance, i pulled the outter shell off to expose the actuator motor and to check the cable play..(08 scg).. i rode the bike with the cover off and found that regardless of engine speed, the actuator motor didnt move the cable crank...i checked the valve on the muffler and it was working freely... when is the motor susposed to move the cable? | ||

do this (per the manual): kill switch to "RUN" hold throttle wide open switch key to "ignition ON" (DO NOT START THE ENGINE LIKE THIS) this should cycle the actuator. if it doesn't move, seems like you've got a problem with it. I have been through three of those motors. 08 12S The dealer even replaced the muffler. All they told me was to avoid long periods of idling. | ||

ok, you got me.... i did the proceedure and the actuator opened and closed... why does it not move at all while im riding at any throttle position...??? | ||

i think i've read a lot of other threads where people mention never witnessing the movement of the actuator... i can say i've never noticed mine move, other than at initial startup. of course... it isn't really in my normal line of sight while riding. you've got a gremlin? sadly, you probably want to look elsewhere... | ||

i painted a dot on the cable, so that i can see any movement while riding... ive done everything from cruising at highway and city speeds and no change...full throttle to redline and no movement.. | ||

The motor will move if you just start the engine and stab the throttle Wide open. Don't let the engine rev too high but atleast 5000rpm, it will activate the motor if it doesn't you may have a faulty ECM since all the other test are good. | ||

I went through a couple actuators too. I just wired my valve open...works great. | ||

I fully agree with Roadking. I wired my actuator fully open, and I wish I had done it sooner! Sure you'll 'theoretically' lose a few ft/lbs of torque on the low end, but I really don't feel it myself. The bike actually runs BETTER now with the exhaust flowing freely. The rough idling and stumble off idle are completely gone now and it sounds better to boot! | ||

i took it out again and took it to redline a few times...this time, it would open quickly at 5k plus and close quickly at redline.... it appears that it is rarely open, maybe 2 percent of my riding time.. my next step is to wire it open as suggested and see what happens to the stumble... |
