The EPS (expanded poly-styrene)foam in the helmet can only be compressed once. If the
drop could have caused the foam to compress then it is garbage.

had an Arai Profile that was the biggest POS helmet ever made.

I know we have talked about it before, but for the new folks here:
I love my Profile. Mine has been a gem to own. Even the flat black finish is holding up.

As you will see from that article, the Snell standards are unrealistic and result in helmets which transmit too many Gs to a rider's head.

From the article:

Dr. Jim Newman, an actual rocket scientist and highly respected head-impact expert—he was once a Snell Foundation director—puts it this way: "If you want to create a realistic helmet standard, you don't go bashing helmets onto hemispherical steel balls. And you certainly don't do it twice.

"Over the last 30 years," continues Newman, "we've come to the realization that people falling off motorcycles hardly ever, ever hit their head in the same place twice. So we have helmets that are designed to withstand two hits at the same site. But in doing so, we have severely, severely compromised their ability to take one hit and absorb energy properly.

"The consequence is, when you have one hit at one site in an accident situation, two things happen: One, you don't fully utilize the energy-absorbing material that's available. And two, you generate higher G loading on the head than you need to. "What's happened to Snell over the years is that in order to make what's perceived as a better helmet, they kept raising the impact energy. What they should have been doing, in my view, is lowering the allowable G force.

The DOT helmets we had were all plastic-shelled, and none cost more than $100. How did they do? They kicked butt.


Based on that article, I bought a Fulmer AFD4 and then proceeded to crash test it at highway speeds (that purchase was intentional -- the crash was not). The helmet looked like it had been run through a belt sander after having taken a big impact. I got a broken collarbone and some abrasions, but I did not die and I did incur a brain injury. Not statistically significant, with a sample of one rider in one crash, but I replaced the helmet with an identical one.

I like my Shark RSX helmet waaaay more than the HJC AC-10 Carbon that I wore for one year.

That article is a bunch of muckraking. If you actually go and read the standards, DOT allows even more impact energy transmission (400G vs snells 300G)! They failed at basic math apparently. And the testing they do is grossly incomplete. The COST 327 report that they reference themselves even says that a flat impact is the least likely to cause injury in the first place but that's there main testing!

Read Snells rebuttal.

I thought I saw Snell is changing their standards to be closer to DOT.

Wow guys, thanks for the overwhelming response. I think i will most likely go with the Scorpion. I like its looks the best and like i said earlier it fit my head really well, better than my shoei.

Dear mr. fmaxwell, I read that article. And can I just say it was alot easier when I just wanted a purty helmet to match my xb....seriously, good article.
